Biography

Short Description

Faustino Míguez González, born Manuel Míguez González, was a Galician Piarist priest of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who was later canonized by the Catholic Church. He was born on 24 March 1831 in the rural hamlet of Xamirás, in the parish of Acebedo do Río near Celanova in the province of Ourense, Galicia, in northwestern Spain. His parents, Benito Míguez and María González, were farmers of modest means. He was baptized on the day of his birth and raised in the devout Catholic setting typical of rural Galicia. After early local schooling he discerned a religious vocation and in 1850 entered the novitiate of the Order of Poor Clerics Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools—the Piarists—at Maceda. He took the religious name Faustino of the Incarnation, completed his formation in the order, and was ordained to the priesthood on 8 March 1856.

In keeping with the Piarist charism of Saint Joseph Calasanz, Father Faustino devoted himself to the Christian education of children and youth, especially the poor. He taught the natural sciences and other subjects in Piarist colleges in Spain, including in Madrid and later in Getafe and in Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the province of Cádiz. Alongside classroom work he pursued a serious interest in botany, chemistry, and pharmacy. Using medicinal plants, he prepared remedies that became popularly known as Father Faustino’s medicines. These preparations were given to the sick, particularly the poor, and some remained associated with the congregation he later founded. Contemporaries understood this scientific activity as an extension of his priestly and educational mission rather than as a separate career.

Concerned that girls, especially those of limited means, lacked access to the kind of education the Piarists offered boys, he founded in 1885 in Sanlúcar de Barrameda the Institute of the Daughters of the Divine Shepherdess, known as the Calasanzian Sisters. The congregation was dedicated to the education of girls and to pastoral work in the spirit of Calasanz. It received ecclesiastical approval and established its motherhouse in Getafe, near Madrid. Father Faustino remained a Piarist while serving as founder and spiritual father to the sisters. He spent his final decades in Getafe, continuing to teach, to advise the congregation, and to care for the sick through his pharmaceutical knowledge and priestly ministry. He was regarded in his lifetime as a humble, industrious religious of simple habits.

He died in Getafe on 8 March 1925, the sixty-ninth anniversary of his ordination, at the age of ninety-three. He was buried in Getafe, and his tomb at the motherhouse of the Calasanzian Sisters became a place of devotion. A canonical process examined his life and reputation for holiness. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome on 25 October 1998. A further miracle attributed to his intercession was recognized, and Pope Francis canonized him on 15 October 2017 in Saint Peter’s Square. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 8 March. He is invoked especially in connection with pharmacy and with the education of the young, and he remains the founder-saint of the Calasanzian Sisters.
