Biography

Short Description

Saint Faustinus is the name borne by more than one early Christian figure, but in Western hagiography it most commonly denotes the martyr of Brescia who is venerated together with his brother Saint Jovita. According to a Latin Passio written long after the events it claims to record, Faustinus and Jovita belonged to a distinguished family of Brixia (modern Brescia) in northern Italy. That narrative presents Faustinus as a priest and Jovita as a deacon who preached the Christian faith openly during the reign of the emperor Hadrian in the second century. They are said to have been arrested, tortured at Brescia, Milan, and Rome, and finally beheaded at Brescia. None of these biographical details can be confirmed from contemporary documents. Modern historians treat the Acts as pious legend rather than as a reliable historical source, and no inscription, official record, or early chronicle preserves a verified year of birth or death.

What can be established with greater confidence is the antiquity of their cult in Brescia. By the early Middle Ages a church dedicated to the two brothers stood in the city, and their names entered the martyrologies that shaped the Roman liturgical tradition. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Saints Faustinus and Jovita on 15 February. Their relics have for centuries been enshrined in the basilica of Santi Faustino e Giovita, often called San Faustino Maggiore, which became a principal focus of civic and diocesan devotion. The pair were adopted as principal patrons of Brescia, a role they retain in the local church. The traditional placement of the martyrdom under Hadrian, often given approximately as 120 or 121, derives solely from the legendary Passio and should not be treated as a verified historical date.

A later Brescian tradition identified a fourth-century bishop of the same see, also named Faustinus, as a descendant of the martyrs and as the compiler of their Acts. That bishop is commemorated separately, usually on 16 February, and is sometimes said to have died about 381; he belongs to a better-attested episcopal succession, but the claimed family relationship and authorship remain unverified. The two cults nevertheless reinforced one another and helped to make the name Faustinus central to Brescian Christian memory.

Other martyrs named Faustinus appear in the Roman Martyrology and should not be confused with the Brescian priest. Notably, a Roman martyr commemorated with Saints Simplicius and Beatrice on 29 July is said to have suffered in the Diocletianic persecution and to have been buried on the Via Portuensis. Because contemporary evidence for the Brescian Faustinus is lacking, his life can be described only through the lens of later legend and through the well-documented medieval and modern cult that made him, with Jovita, a defining saint of Brescia.
