Biography

Short Description

Faustus of Riez, called Faustus Reiensis in Latin sources, was a monk, abbot, bishop, and theologian of the fifth-century Gallic church. Reliable ancient notices, including the catalogue of Gennadius of Marseille, describe him as a Briton by birth who embraced the monastic life in Gaul. No contemporary text gives a precise year or town of birth; historians therefore place his origin in Britain in the late fourth or early fifth century and his arrival at Lérins in early adulthood. The island monastery of Lérins, established by Honoratus off the Provençal coast, was then among the foremost centers of Western monasticism. Faustus was formed there in a discipline that combined Egyptian-inspired asceticism with clerical study. He rose to succeed Maximus as abbot, an office associated in the sources with the 430s, and governed the community for a substantial period, gaining a name for personal austerity and for preaching.

From Lérins he was elevated to the episcopal see of Riez (ancient Reii Apollinares) in Provence, again following Maximus, who had made the same passage from abbacy to bishopric. As bishop, Faustus belonged to the network of Gallic prelates who sought to maintain Catholic order amid the collapse of imperial administration in the West and the settlement of Arian Germanic kingdoms. Sidonius Apollinaris, the aristocratic bishop of Clermont, corresponded with him and praised both his holiness and his Latin style. Later tradition, consistent with the politics of the 470s and 480s, holds that Faustus was driven from his see by the Visigothic king Euric, an Arian, and restored after Euric’s death, when the political climate in southern Gaul shifted. He took part in the synodal life of the Gallic church; a council at Arles in the early 470s is particularly associated with the commission that led him to write on grace.

The treatise De gratia Dei, together with related letters, is Faustus’s principal surviving work. It was composed to refute the priest Lucidus, whose teaching on predestination was judged to undermine moral effort and the justice of God. Faustus argued that grace is indispensable for salvation and for perseverance, yet that the human will has a real part in the initium fidei, the beginning of faith, and that predestination should not be so construed as to cancel freedom or to imply that God predestines anyone to damnation apart from foreseen demerit. This mediating doctrine, rooted in the monastic theology of Lérins and in resistance to what its authors saw as fatalism, came to be called semi-Pelagian by later controversialists. Faustus also wrote De Spiritu Sancto, defending the divinity of the Holy Spirit against Macedonian error, and a body of sermons and letters of which only a portion is extant. Gennadius, writing while Faustus’s memory was still fresh, listed these works and treated their author as an orthodox and illustrious teacher.

Reception of his theology changed in the sixth century. The Second Council of Orange, held in 529 under Caesarius of Arles and with papal confirmation, defined a doctrine of grace closer to Augustine’s later teaching and rejected the theses that the beginning of faith could be ascribed to the human will unaided, or that perseverance was so in human power as Faustus’s school had allowed. Orange did not anathematize Faustus by name, and it stopped short of the most rigorous Augustinian positions on predestination. Nonetheless his writings fell under a cloud in much of the medieval Latin West, even as manuscripts continued to circulate and as later readers sometimes excerpted him. In Provence a cult of sanctity endured. He is commemorated as a saint and bishop.

Faustus died at Riez near the end of the fifth century. Ancient sources do not fix the day or the exact year; modern reference works commonly assign his death to the period between 490 and 495. The place of burial is not securely recorded. The Roman Martyrology enters his feast on 28 September, recalling him as monk and abbot of Lérins and as bishop, distinguished for preaching and for his writings. No medieval or modern list of patronages—of places, trades, or causes—can be verified for him from standard hagiographical sources. He was never the object of a papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult belongs to the era of local episcopal and popular recognition later termed pre-congregation.
