Biography

Short Description

Fedelmid mac Crimthainn, whose name is also commonly given in modern scholarship as Feidlimid mac Crimthainn, was a ninth-century King of Munster in Ireland. He belonged to the Cenél Fíngin branch of the Eóganacht Chaisil, the leading royal kindred of Cashel in what is now County Tipperary. His father was Crimthann. He obtained the kingship of Munster in 820 and held it until his death in 847, a long reign by the standards of a period in which provincial overkingship was frequently contested among related dynastic segments and neighbouring peoples. Cashel served as both a royal centre and an ecclesiastical site, and Fedelmid’s career is unusual among Irish kings of his century because contemporary chronicles treat him as a churchman as well as a warrior-ruler.

The Annals of Inisfallen, a Munster compilation, remember him as a scribe and an anchorite and as among the foremost of the Irish of his day. Historians generally associate him with the Céli Dé reform current then active in the Irish church. He is recorded as having taken the abbacy of Cork, and he operated within a world in which major churches were political as well as religious institutions, closely tied to particular dynasties. The combination of kingship with clerical or eremitical status was known in early medieval Ireland, though Fedelmid is one of the more clearly attested examples. Later writers sometimes speak of him in episcopal language, but the contemporary annals emphasise kingship, the Cork abbacy, and the titles of scribe and anchorite rather than a diocesan bishopric of Cashel, an office that in its later medieval form belongs to a subsequent age.

His reign was marked by repeated military activity inside Munster and beyond it. He campaigned against the Déisi and other groups within the southern province. He is especially noted in the annals for attacks on great monasteries that lay in the spheres of rival dynasties, above all Clonmacnoise on the Shannon, which he is recorded as plundering and burning, together with associated termon lands such as those of Durrow, in the 830s. Such assaults on churches were a recognised instrument of ninth-century Irish politics, aimed at the wealth, prestige, and dynastic allies of competing kings. He also led forces northward in contention with the Uí Néill. In 838 a royal meeting between Fedelmid and Niall Caille, king of Tara, is recorded, and in the following years he is described as moving armies into the midlands and even encamping in the region of Tara, a gesture that implied a claim to stand among the principal kings of Ireland.

Fedelmid died in 847. The Annals of Ulster note that he fell asleep, without specifying cause or place. Later narrative tradition attached to Clonmacnoise claimed that he was struck down through the power of Saint Ciarán in retribution for his attacks on that monastery; that story belongs to hagiographical polemic and local memory rather than to the contemporary annalistic record. He was succeeded as king of Munster by Ólchobar mac Cináeda of the Eóganacht Áine. No reliable source preserves a year of birth, a named spouse, children, or a burial place. His reputation therefore rests on the annalistic portrait of a long-reigning Munster king who was also a cleric and reform-minded churchman, and on the later, hostile legend that grew up around his wars with Clonmacnoise.
