Biography

Short Description

Felice Tantardini was born on 12 June 1898 in Introbio, a mountain village in the province of Lecco in Lombardy, northern Italy. He grew up in a Catholic family of modest means and received only a limited formal education, as was common for rural working-class youth of that time. As a young man he trained and worked as a mechanic and blacksmith. Those practical trades later became the core of his missionary service. Feeling a vocation to the missions, he entered the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) in the Milan area as a coadjutor brother rather than seeking ordination to the priesthood. After formation he was sent in 1922 to Burma, then under British rule, and he remained in that country for the rest of his life.

In Burma he served not from the pulpit but as a builder, carpenter, mechanic, and general craftsman for the Church. He constructed churches, chapels, schools, convents, residences, and other mission buildings, often with scarce materials and with his own hands. He repaired vehicles, engines, and tools and passed on practical skills to local people. His assignments took him to various PIME stations, especially in the Shan States in the east of the country. Missionaries and local Catholics knew him as a humble, hardworking, and cheerful brother who joined heavy physical labor to a regular life of prayer. He stayed through the Japanese occupation of the Second World War, Burmese independence in 1948, and the later decades of political instability and military government, and he did not abandon the communities he served.

Tantardini’s reputation for holiness rested on a consistent pattern of simplicity, obedience, devotion to the Eucharist and to the Virgin Mary, and generous help given to Catholics and non-Christians alike. He never resettled permanently in Italy and identified himself with the Burmese mission. He died on 23 March 1991 at Mong Ping in Shan State, Myanmar, at the age of ninety-two, after some sixty-nine years in the missions.

A cause for his beatification was later introduced. On 11 December 2019 Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing his heroic virtues, conferring the title of Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized. His life is cited as an example of the hidden, practical holiness of missionary brothers who built up the Church through labor as much as through words.
