Biography

Short Description

Feliciano de Córdoba appears in some cataloguing systems, including Wikidata as item Q5858030, as a named individual connected with the city of Córdoba. Beyond this identification, however, standard historical and hagiographical reference works do not furnish a securely documented biography. Dates of birth and death, family background, and the precise circumstances of his life or death cannot be confirmed from widely available reliable sources, and it would be improper to invent or conjecture them.

The designation de Córdoba points to a link with Córdoba, one of the principal cities of the Iberian Peninsula. Córdoba was an important Roman colony, later a Visigothic see, and subsequently the capital of the Umayyad emirate and caliphate of al-Andalus. Throughout these periods the city possessed a Christian community that produced martyrs under Roman imperial persecution in the early fourth century as well as under Islamic rule in the ninth century, when a series of voluntary martyrdoms occurred among the Mozarabic Christians. Numerous saints and blesseds are associated with Córdoba, yet Feliciano is not among the most frequently cited names in the principal accounts of those groups.

It is therefore not possible, on the basis of presently verifiable information, to place Feliciano de Córdoba with confidence in any specific century or to identify him as a bishop, monk, lay martyr, or other ecclesiastical figure. No liturgical feast day universally assigned to him, no list of patronages, and no record of formal canonization or beatification by a named pope appear in the major martyrologies or in commonly consulted Catholic encyclopedias.

In the absence of a surviving contemporary vita, inscription, or liturgical office that can be independently corroborated, the figure of Feliciano de Córdoba remains obscure. Local tradition in the diocese of Córdoba or unpublished archival material might one day supply further details, but such information is not part of the established historical record accessible in standard published sources.
