Biography

Short Description

Felicissimus was a deacon of the Church of Rome who was put to death in the mid-third century during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Valerian. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, or early life; he enters the historical record only as one of the Roman clergy associated with Pope Sixtus II. In 257 Valerian forbade Christian assemblies and visits to the cemeteries and required bishops, priests, and deacons to sacrifice to the gods. A second edict in 258 ordered the immediate execution of obstinate clergy. These measures struck the Roman church at its leadership. Contemporary notice of the resulting executions comes above all from a letter of Cyprian of Carthage, written in 258, which reports that Pope Sixtus was beheaded in a cemetery on 6 August together with four deacons.

Later Roman tradition, preserved in the Liber Pontificalis, in the martyrologies, and in the liturgy, names Felicissimus and Agapitus among the deacons who died with Sixtus, and also lists Januarius, Magnus, Vincent, and Stephen. The most celebrated of Sixtus’s deacons, Lawrence, was martyred separately four days later. According to the received account, Sixtus was seized on 6 August 258 while celebrating the Eucharist in the cemetery of Praetextatus on the Appian Way and was beheaded there. Felicissimus and Agapitus are said to have suffered in the same action. Cyprian’s letter, the earliest source, does not name the deacons individually and speaks of four rather than six, so the precise identification of Felicissimus as one of those four rests on subsequent Roman liturgical memory rather than on a contemporary named list. Historians generally accept that several Roman deacons were killed with Sixtus in August 258 and that Felicissimus belongs to that group as commemorated by the Roman church.

Felicissimus and Agapitus were buried in the cemetery of Praetextatus, whereas Sixtus himself was interred in the nearby cemetery of Callistus. Late-antique and early medieval pilgrim itineraries mention the tombs of Felicissimus and Agapitus in Praetextatus, which indicates an established cult at the graves by the fourth and fifth centuries. The Depositio Martyrum in the Chronography of 354 records Sixtus on 6 August; later martyrological tradition joined Felicissimus and Agapitus to that date. The Roman Martyrology continues to commemorate them on 6 August together with Pope Sixtus II. Their veneration is of the ancient, pre-congregational type: they were honored as martyrs because of the continuous liturgical and topographical memory of the Roman church, not because of a later papal process of canonization or beatification.

No writings by Felicissimus survive, and no independent biography describes his age, character, or exact duties among the deacons of Rome. There is no documented evidence of a spouse, children, or membership in a religious order, nor is he attested as patron of particular places, professions, or causes. What can be said with caution is that he was a Roman deacon who, in the judgment of the ancient Roman liturgy, shared the martyrdom of Pope Sixtus II in August 258 and was buried and venerated in the cemetery of Praetextatus.
