Biography

Short Description

Saint Felicitas of Rome, also called Felicity, is an early Christian martyr whose cult in the city of Rome is among the most ancient attested in the Roman Church. She must be distinguished from Saint Felicitas of Carthage, the slave martyred in 203 with Saint Perpetua. According to the later Latin Acts circulating under her name, Felicitas was a wealthy and pious widow of noble Roman family who raised seven sons in the Christian faith. The legend names the sons Januarius, Felix, Philip, Silvanus, Alexander, Vitalis, and Martial. Denounced as Christians, mother and sons were examined by a prefect called Publius; after they refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods, the sons were put to death by various means on successive days and Felicitas herself was beheaded. The Acts place this under Marcus Aurelius, and later tradition commonly assigns the year 165, but that date is not confirmed by any contemporary record.

Modern hagiographical scholarship treats these Acts as a composition of the fifth or sixth century with little independent historical value. The story is modelled in part on the mother and seven brothers of 2 Maccabees 7, and the seven sons may represent a conflation of several distinct groups of Roman martyrs whose commemorations fell in July. What can be affirmed from earlier evidence is that a martyr named Felicitas was buried in the Cemetery of Maximus on the Via Salaria Nova and that her cult was already established in Rome by the mid-fourth century. The Depositio Martyrum in the Chronograph of 354 records her feast on 23 November, which remains her day in the General Roman Calendar.

Pope Boniface I (418–422) is associated with an oratory at her tomb. In the late sixth century Pope Gregory the Great preached a homily in that church on her feast, presenting Felicitas as a mother who, by encouraging her children to remain faithful unto death, bore them spiritually a second time. The cemetery later took her name. During the Middle Ages portions of her relics were translated to other Roman churches, including Santa Susanna. A separate feast of the seven brothers on 10 July, long observed, was omitted in the calendar reform of 1969 because of the legendary character of the supporting Acts; the November commemoration of Felicitas was retained.

Felicitas has been invoked as a patron of widows and of parents, especially mothers, who have lost children. Even in its legendary form her story served as a model of steadfast faith and maternal courage under persecution. She is venerated in both the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Almost every biographical detail beyond her name, her Roman burial, and the antiquity of her cult remains uncertain, yet the persistence of her memory from late antiquity onward testifies to the impression made by the early Roman martyrs on the Christian community of the city.
