Biography

Short Description

Felicula, also known as Saint Felicula, was an early Christian virgin martyr venerated at Rome. Virtually no contemporary historical evidence survives concerning her life, death, or social background. The principal narrative attached to her name is found in the so-called Acts of Saints Nereus and Achilleus, a Latin hagiographical romance usually dated by scholars to the fifth or sixth century. That text is widely regarded as legendary rather than historical, and later martyrologies largely excerpt or abridge it. Because of the nature of the sources, neither a precise year of birth nor a precise year of death can be established from reliable historical evidence.

In the legendary account, Felicula appears as the foster-sister or close companion of Saint Petronilla, who is herself presented in the same Acts as a daughter of the Apostle Peter. After a pagan suitor named Flaccus had sought to marry Petronilla, and after Petronilla had refused him, fasted for three days, and died, Flaccus turned to Felicula and demanded that she become his wife. Felicula refused both the marriage and the accompanying demand that she offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. She was then confined in a dark prison and deprived of food and drink until she died of starvation. Her body was thrown into a sewer. According to the same legend, the priest Nicomedes recovered the remains and gave them burial.

The Roman Martyrology, drawing on this tradition, commemorates her on 13 June and locates the burial on the Via Ardeatina. Medieval Roman itineraries and later local tradition also mention a tomb or cult site associated with her name, and a church of Santa Felicola existed in Rome during the Middle Ages. The legendary cycle sometimes places the events in the first century, in the time of the emperor Domitian, because of the supposed connection with Saint Peter through Petronilla; other compilers have assigned her to a later period. Neither dating rests on independent documentary proof, and both should be treated as unverified.

Felicula is honored in the Roman Catholic Church as a virgin martyr. Her feast day is 13 June. No specialized patronages of places, professions, or causes are firmly attached to her in the standard liturgical and hagiographical handbooks. She belongs to the large group of early Roman martyrs whose cult is ancient and liturgically attested, but whose personal history remains almost entirely unknown apart from later legend.
