Biography

Short Description

Felinus and Gratian (Latin Felinus et Gratianus; Italian Felino e Graziano) are a pair of early Christian soldier-martyrs venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, especially at Perugia in Umbria and at Arona on Lake Maggiore. Surviving tradition presents them as members of the Roman army who were stationed in or near Perugia in the mid-third century and who were converted to Christianity by Saint Herculanus, bishop of that city. No contemporary inscription, official act, or independent chronicle names them, and they do not appear in the earliest Roman depositio martyrum. What is known of them therefore rests on later local cult, the Roman Martyrology, and medieval narrative material that must be used with caution.

Hagiographical accounts place their deaths in the persecution associated with the emperor Decius, whose edict of 250 required inhabitants of the empire to sacrifice to the traditional gods and to obtain a certificate of compliance. Christians who refused faced imprisonment, torture, and execution. According to the tradition recorded in the Martyrology, Felinus and Gratian, having accepted baptism, declined the imperial sacrifice, were arrested at Perugia, and were put to death there. The precise method of execution is not established by any early reliable source; later passiones tend to follow conventional patterns of interrogation and torment rather than independent testimony. Their deaths are conventionally dated to 250, within the brief window of the Decian measures (249–251).

The cult remained local at Perugia until the late tenth century. In 979, at the request of Countess Ingeltrude, Archbishop Landulf of Milan had the relics translated from Perugia to Arona, on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, where they were placed in the church of San Siro. That translation made Felinus and Gratian the principal patrons of Arona, a role they have retained. Their feast is kept on 1 June, the date assigned to them in the Roman Martyrology (Perusii sanctorum martyrum Felini et Gratiani). Relics have remained at Arona; the pair were never the object of a formal papal canonization process of the later medieval or Tridentine type, their veneration belonging to the ancient, pre-congregation cult of martyrs.

Nothing verifiable is known of their birthplace, family, or marital status. They held no episcopal or patriarchal office and belonged to no religious order; they are remembered as lay soldiers. Historical judgment must distinguish the durable core of the tradition—Christian soldiers martyred at Perugia in the third century and later honored at Arona—from legendary elaborations. Their patronage of Arona and their liturgical commemoration on 1 June are the best-attested facts of their afterlife in the Church.
