Biography

Short Description

The single given name Felix (Latin felix, “happy” or “fortunate”) is one of the most frequently attested names in Christian hagiography. It was borne by martyrs, bishops, popes, monks, and later Counter-Reformation saints across the Mediterranean and Latin West from the third century onward. The present request supplies no Wikidata identifier, no encyclopedia article, no feast date, no see, and no toponym. Under those conditions it is not possible to attach a verified birth year, death year, place of origin, burial, religious order, or patronage to one historical individual without substituting conjecture for evidence.

Several Bishops of Rome used the name: Felix I in the third century, Felix III in the later fifth century, and Felix IV in the sixth century; an antipope is conventionally numbered Felix II. None of these offices may be assumed for an unspecified “Felix.” Equally well known in the martyrological tradition are Felix of Nola, associated in Campania with Bishop Maximus and later commemorated by Paulinus of Nola; African and Spanish martyrs such as Felix of Thibiuca and Felix of Girona; and Roman martyrs paired in the old calendars with Adauctus or with Nabor. Later centuries add Felix of Cantalice, a Capuchin lay brother of the sixteenth century, and Felix of Valois, long linked to the Trinitarian order, though modern historical criticism has treated the latter’s medieval dossier with caution. Each of these men has a distinct chronology, cult, and (where it exists) patronage; none can be selected as “the” subject on the name alone.

Hagiographical method distinguishes homonyms by place, office, or feast. Without at least one such qualifier, fields that demand a unique person—year of birth as opposed to year of episcopal accession, city of death, burial site, spouse, children, canonizing pope—must remain empty. The masculine grammatical form of the name supports recording gender as male; it does not identify which male. Claims that this Felix was a pope, a patriarch, a monk of a named order, or a patron of particular places or causes would be guesses among incompatible candidates.

In short, “Felix” without further specification is a label for a large class of holy men, not a recoverable biography. A careful account can note the frequency of the name, the main types of saints who bore it, and the impossibility of filling a life-record until a locality, century, or liturgical date is provided. That limitation is itself the historically responsible conclusion.
