Biography

Short Description

Felix and Adauctus are a pair of Christian martyrs traditionally believed to have suffered at Rome during the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian, around the year 303. According to their legendary Acts, which were first given wide circulation in the ninth-century martyrology of Ado of Vienne, Felix was a Roman priest who was arrested, tortured, and condemned to death for refusing to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. As he was being led to the place of execution, an unknown bystander, moved by Felix's constancy, openly professed the Christian faith and was immediately seized and put to death with him. Because the companion's own name was not known, later tradition called him Adauctus, from the Latin word meaning added or increased, signifying that he had been joined to Felix in martyrdom. While the narrative details of this account are regarded by modern hagiographers as largely legendary, the existence of a cult of two martyrs of these names at Rome is well attested from late antiquity.

The two saints were buried in the Cemetery of Commodilla, a catacomb situated on the Via Ostiensis not far from the basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Their tomb became a focus of pilgrimage, and by the later fourth century Pope Damasus I (366-384) had composed one of his characteristic metrical epitaphs in their honor, an inscription that constitutes important contemporary evidence for their veneration and that identifies Felix as a priest. A small basilica or oratory was subsequently constructed over the burial site within the catacomb. Early medieval itineraries for pilgrims, including the Notitia Ecclesiarum Urbis Romae and the De locis sanctis martyrum, list the resting place of Felix and Adauctus among the holy sites of Rome, confirming that their shrine remained an established station on the pilgrimage circuit of the sixth and seventh centuries. Wall paintings of the sixth or seventh century in the Commodilla catacomb include depictions associated with the martyrs.

The Liber Pontificalis records that Pope Leo III (795-816) made donations to a church of Saints Felix and Adauctus, indicating the continuation of their cult into the Carolingian period. In later centuries portions of their relics were translated to various churches north of the Alps as well as to other Roman churches; distributions of relics are recorded in the later Middle Ages and again in the sixteenth century under Pope Gregory XIII. Their names appear on 30 August in the Hieronymian Martyrology and have been retained on that date in the Roman Martyrology. They were never the subject of a formal papal canonization, their status as saints resting on the ancient and continuous cultus typical of the early Roman martyrs.

Little can be established with certainty about the personal lives of either man beyond the fact of their martyrdom and burial at Rome. Felix is consistently described in the tradition as a priest, but no reliable information survives concerning his family, place of birth, or the precise circumstances of his arrest. Adauctus remains, even in the legend, an anonymous figure whose very name is a later designation. No evidence indicates that either belonged to a religious order in the later canonical sense, nor is anything known of spouses or children. Their patronage is not associated with any particular place, profession, or cause in the way that many more famous saints are, and their liturgical commemoration, though ancient, has remained relatively modest. The historical kernel that can be recovered is therefore that of two Roman Christians, one of them a priest named Felix, who were put to death for their faith, buried together in the Commodilla cemetery, and honored as martyrs from at least the time of Pope Damasus onward.
