Biography

Short Description

Félix de Jesús Rougier was born on 17 December 1859 in Meilhaud, a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department of the Auvergne region of central France. He entered the Society of Mary, known as the Marist Fathers, and was ordained a Catholic priest in the later nineteenth century. Marist formation emphasized missionary outreach and a Marian spirituality, and Rougier was eventually assigned to work in Latin America. By the early twentieth century he was serving in Mexico, a country then entering a long period of revolution and anti-clerical conflict, and Mexico became the setting of the rest of his life and of the institutes with which his name is associated.

In Mexico he encountered Concepción Cabrera de Armida, a married lay mystic and spiritual writer commonly called Conchita, whose reported interior experiences and writings on the Cross formed the basis of a cluster of religious and lay works later known as the Works of the Cross. Rougier became a close collaborator in that spiritual current and a director of souls connected with it. After years of discernment and in the face of opposition from Marist superiors who did not wish him to found a new institute, he established the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit (Misioneros del Espíritu Santo) in Mexico City on 25 December 1914. The congregation’s charism was directed toward the sanctification of priests, devotion to the Holy Spirit and to Christ as priest and victim, and missionary service. He is regarded as founder of that congregation and as a principal figure in the wider family of communities linked to the Works of the Cross.

His foundations took shape during the Mexican Revolution and under later governments that restricted public worship, expelled or harassed clergy, and at times drove religious life underground, including the years associated with the Cristero conflict. Rougier remained in Mexico, forming the first generations of Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and continuing spiritual direction of priests, religious, and laity. Contemporary and later accounts from his institutes describe a life of personal austerity, tested obedience in conflict with his original order, and persistence in implanting a priestly spirituality of reparation and of the Holy Spirit amid political hostility to the Church.

Rougier died in Mexico City on 10 January 1938. The Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and related communities continued after his death and spread beyond Mexico. A cause for his beatification has been introduced in the Catholic Church, and he is commonly styled Servant of God; he has not been beatified or canonized. He is remembered especially in Mexico and among the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit as a French-born Marist missionary who became the founder of a Mexican-born priestly congregation and a collaborator in the Works of the Cross.
