Biography

Short Description

Felix, Fortunatus, and Achilleus are venerated as a group of early Christian martyrs of Valence, in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis in what is now southeastern France. In the traditional account preserved by later hagiographers and by the Roman Martyrology, Felix was a priest and Fortunatus and Achilleus were deacons. They are said to have been sent by Saint Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons, to preach the Christian faith at Valence. The legend reports that their mission was successful and that a large part of the city was converted through their ministry.

The historical reconstruction of their lives is severely limited by the sources. The surviving passio is late and is generally judged by hagiographical scholars to be largely legendary. A well-known chronological difficulty arises because Irenaeus of Lyons died around the beginning of the third century, while some versions of the story place the martyrdom under the emperor Aurelian, who reigned from 270 to 275. Other traditions assign the deaths to about the year 212. No contemporary documents confirm names, offices, or dates with certainty. What is clearer is that a local cult of three martyrs bearing these names took root at Valence at a relatively early date and that they came to be honored as the proto-martyrs of that church.

According to the narrative in the Roman Martyrology and related texts, the three missionaries were arrested by a local commander named Cornelius after they refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods. They were imprisoned and subjected to various tortures intended to force them to abandon the Christian faith. Remaining constant in their confession, they were finally beheaded. Their bodies were buried at Valence, and in later centuries a church was raised in their honor. The Roman Martyrology commemorates them on 23 April, identifying Felix as a priest and Fortunatus and Achilleus as deacons sent by blessed Irenaeus of Lyons to preach the word of God, and stating that after converting the greater part of the city they were cast into prison, tortured, and beheaded.

Throughout the Middle Ages the diocese of Valence maintained liturgical and popular devotion to these martyrs. Their relics were kept and venerated locally, and their feast formed part of the regional calendar. Outside the Rhône valley they remained comparatively obscure and never acquired the wide-ranging patronages associated with more famous Gallic saints. Modern historical study therefore treats Felix, Fortunatus, and Achilleus primarily as figures of early Christian commemoration in Valence rather than as individuals whose biographies can be established in detail. The persistence of their cult nevertheless attests to the importance of martyr memory in the Christianization of southern Gaul.
