Biography

Short Description

Felix Mary Ghebreamlak was an Eritrean Catholic priest of the Ge'ez (Alexandrian) rite who entered the Cistercian Order in Italy and is honored in the Catholic Church with the title of Venerable. He was born on 23 June 1895 in Hebo, in the Akele Guzai highlands of Eritrea, then administered as an Italian colony. His family belonged to the Eastern Catholic community that had taken shape in the region through missionary work among Christians of the Ethiopian liturgical tradition. Raised in that dual heritage of Ge'ez worship and communion with Rome, he was sent to seminary and ordained to the priesthood in 1920 for service among Eritrean Catholics.

In the years after ordination he worked as a diocesan priest while forming a clear desire to restore organized monastic life in his homeland. Monasticism had long shaped Christianity in the Horn of Africa, yet the Catholic communities of early twentieth-century Eritrea still lacked a stable contemplative institute of their own. Ghebreamlak came to believe that Cistercian observance—liturgical prayer, communal discipline, and manual work—could take root there and support both the spiritual life of the faithful and the formation of clergy. With the consent of his superiors he left for Italy in order to learn that life at first hand and, if possible, to prepare a foundation that might one day return with him to East Africa.

He was received at the Abbey of Casamari, a historic Cistercian house in the Ciociaria district of Lazio. There he took the religious name Felix Mary (Felice Maria) and entered the novitiate. Those who lived with him later recalled his seriousness in prayer, his attachment to both the Roman and Ge'ez traditions, and his hope of transplanting Cistercian life to Eritrea. The plan was cut short by illness. He contracted tuberculosis and, after a decline that the medicine of the time could not reverse, he died at Casamari on 8 June 1934, still a young monk and without having seen a Cistercian house established in his native country.

His reputation for holiness was kept alive among Cistercians and among Eritrean Catholics. A cause for beatification was later introduced. On 4 May 2017 Pope Francis approved a decree recognizing that Ghebreamlak had practiced the theological and cardinal virtues to a heroic degree, thereby granting him the title of Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal feast day has been assigned to him. He remains of particular interest as an Eastern Catholic of the early twentieth century who sought to join the monastic heritage of the Horn of Africa with the Cistercian Order, and as a witness to the still unfinished work of implanting contemplative life in the Eritrean Catholic Church.
