Biography

Saint Felix of Spoleto is commemorated as a bishop and martyr in the Roman Martyrology on 18 May. The entry states that he suffered at Spoleto in Umbria. Beyond this liturgical notice, virtually nothing can be established with historical certainty about his life, episcopate, or the precise circumstances of his death.

Hagiographical tradition associates him with the persecutions of the early fourth century under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. Spoleto was a significant municipium in Umbria, situated on the Via Flaminia, and possessed a Christian community that produced several martyrs whose names entered the martyrologies. As bishop, Felix would have been among those required to comply with imperial edicts against Christianity. No contemporary passio or reliable acta of his martyrdom have been transmitted, and later legendary accounts, if they once circulated, have not survived in a form accepted by critical hagiography.

The cult of Saint Felix appears to have been of local character, centered on Spoleto. He is distinct from other saints named Felix who were venerated in central Italy, such as Felix of Nola. The principal patron of the city and diocese of Spoleto is Saint Pontianus, another early martyr; Felix occupies a secondary place in local devotion. No securely identified relics or ancient church dedicated specifically to him can be confirmed from available historical sources.

In the absence of further documentation, Felix of Spoleto remains an obscure figure whose memory was preserved by the Church of Umbria as one of its early bishops who died for the faith. His inclusion in the universal martyrology ensured that his name continued to be recited in the liturgy long after the details of his biography had been forgotten.
