Biography

Short Description

Felix of Thibiuca, also known as Felix of Tubzac or Felix of Thibuca, was bishop of the Christian community of Thibiuca in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, in the hinterland of Carthage in what is now Tunisia, at the beginning of the fourth century. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, education, or the date and circumstances of his elevation to the episcopate. He is attested solely through the events of his martyrdom at the opening of the Great Persecution under Diocletian. The chief source is the Latin Acta Felicis, which survives in more than one recension. The shorter African form is widely regarded by modern scholars as among the more historically credible of the early acta martyrum, in part because it names officials independently known from other evidence, including the municipal curator Magnilianus and the proconsul of Africa Gaius Annius Anullinus.

In February 303 the first edict of the Diocletianic persecution ordered the destruction of churches, the surrender and burning of Christian scriptures, and the deprivation of legal standing for Christians. On 5 June 303 Magnilianus summoned Bishop Felix and demanded the sacred books. Felix refused, declaring that it was better that he himself should be burned than that the divine scriptures should be handed over. After a delay of three days he persisted in his refusal and was sent under guard to Carthage to be judged by Anullinus. According to the African recension, the proconsul interrogated him, condemned him when he would not comply, and had him beheaded at Carthage on 15 July 303. A later Italian recension lengthens the story, sending Felix on to Italy, to examination at Rome, and to execution at Venosa in Apulia on 30 August. Historians generally treat that Italian continuation as a subsequent hagiographical expansion, possibly connected with a local cult or with claimed relics, rather than as part of the original African narrative.

In some martyrological notices Felix is grouped with companions named Audactus and Januarius, described as priests, and Fortunatus and Septimus, described as lectors. These names are not consistently present in the core text of the Acta Felicis and may reflect later liturgical association rather than a single documented trial. Felix’s refusal to become a traditor—one who surrendered the scriptures—was remembered in North Africa and later resonated in the Donatist controversies of the fourth and fifth centuries, in which the status of clergy who had yielded during the persecution was bitterly disputed, although the acta themselves do not frame his death in those later polemical terms.

He was honoured as a martyr from an early date. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 24 October. The precise archaeological identification of ancient Thibiuca remains debated, but it is placed in Africa Proconsularis in present-day Tunisia. No verified information survives concerning his place of birth, burial, marital status, or any formal process of canonization, which for martyrs of this period was a matter of local cult and episcopal recognition rather than a later papal decree.
