Biography

Short Description

Feodor of Rostov, known in the world as Ioann (John), was a fourteenth-century Russian Orthodox monk-bishop venerated as a saint. He was the son of Stefan, the elder brother of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, and therefore Sergius’s nephew. The family belonged to the boyar milieu associated with Rostov and later lived in the Radonezh region of northeastern Rus’. No reliable source preserves the year or exact place of his birth. After the death of Stefan’s wife, father and son entered the Trinity Monastery of Saint Sergius. Ioann received the monastic tonsure with the name Feodor and was formed in the ascetic and liturgical life associated with his uncle.

With the blessing of Saint Sergius, Feodor founded the Simonov Monastery near Moscow in the 1370s and became its first hegumen. The community grew into a major Muscovite monastic house. Among those who lived there during his abbacy was the future Saint Kirill of Belozersk. Feodor was regarded as a learned monk; the monastery took part in the spiritual and cultural life of Moscow in the decades after Kulikovo. He remained linked both to the Trinity-Sergius tradition and to the princely court.

In the later 1380s Feodor was consecrated to the episcopate and appointed Archbishop of Rostov, a see whose care included Yaroslavl and Belozersk. His tenure fell during disputes over the metropolitanate of Kiev and all Rus’ and during the political consolidation of the Grand Principality of Moscow. Chronicle notices and later hagiography present him as an educated hierarch who continued to favor monastic foundations. Precise records of his administrative acts are sparse, and surviving accounts do not always agree in every chronological detail.

Feodor died on 28 November 1394 and was buried in Rostov, according to tradition in the Dormition Cathedral. He came to be venerated locally as a saint. His principal feast is kept on 28 November; he is also commemorated with the synaxis of the Rostov wonderworkers. As a monk from youth he lived in celibacy and had neither spouse nor children. He did not hold the office of patriarch or of pope. The written evidence for his life is limited to chronicles, monastic commemorations, and later saints’ lives, which leave many biographical particulars unknown.
