Biography

Short Description

Ferdinand III of Castile, later venerated as Saint Ferdinand (Fernando el Santo), was a thirteenth-century king of Castile and of León whose reign produced the lasting union of those two kingdoms and a major southward advance of Christian rule in Iberia. He was the son of King Alfonso IX of León and Berengaria of Castile. Their marriage, contracted in the late twelfth century, was later declared invalid by the papacy on grounds of consanguinity, but their children were treated as legitimate. When Berengaria’s brother, King Henry I of Castile, died in 1217 without surviving issue, she inherited Castile and almost at once transferred the crown to Ferdinand, who thus became king of Castile while still a young man. Alfonso IX remained king of León until 1230. On his father’s death that year Ferdinand also succeeded in León, despite testamentary arrangements favoring his half-sisters Sancha and Dulce; a negotiated settlement with those princesses and with their mother, Teresa of Portugal, allowed him to take León and to join it permanently to Castile, a union that thereafter endured.

Ferdinand married twice and had numerous children. In 1219 he married Elisabeth of Swabia, known in Castile as Beatrice, a daughter of Philip of Swabia of the Hohenstaufen family. She was the mother of several sons and daughters, including Alfonso, who succeeded as Alfonso X of Castile, as well as Fadrique, Fernando, Felipe, Sancho (later archbishop of Toledo), and others who died young or entered religion. Beatrice died in 1235. In 1237 Ferdinand married Joan of Dammartin, countess of Ponthieu, a French noblewoman. That marriage produced further children, among them Ferdinand, count of Aumale; Eleanor of Castile, who became queen of England as the wife of Edward I; and Louis. Royal administration in his time made increasing use of the Castilian vernacular alongside Latin, and he confirmed privileges and endowments for the University of Salamanca, strengthening it as a studium under royal protection.

His reign is identified above all with the thirteenth-century phase of the Reconquista in Andalusia. Supported by the military orders, urban militias, and at times by Aragonese cooperation, he took a succession of cities and districts from Almohad and successor Muslim rulers. Córdoba, the former Umayyad capital, fell in 1236; the Great Mosque was converted into a cathedral. Jaén was captured in 1246 after earlier campaigns. The longest and most celebrated operation was the siege of Seville, which surrendered in 1248; Ferdinand thereafter used Seville as a principal royal residence. Murcia entered a vassal relationship with Castile. These conquests left the Nasrid kingdom of Granada as the chief remaining Muslim polity in the peninsula, generally as a tribute-paying neighbor. Christian narrative sources present him as a crusading king who also issued municipal fueros and oversaw the settlement of newly won lands, in which Muslim and Jewish communities continued to live under Christian sovereignty.

In reputation Ferdinand was regarded as personally devout: frequent in attendance at Mass, a founder and benefactor of churches, monasteries, and hospitals, and, in later hagiographical tradition, associated with the Franciscan Third Order, though he remained a lay sovereign throughout his life. He died in Seville on 30 May 1252 and was buried in the cathedral there, in the chapel that became the Royal Chapel. Medieval and early modern accounts claimed that his body remained incorrupt, and a cult developed at the tomb. He was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. His feast is kept on 30 May. He is invoked especially in Seville and in other Andalusian cities linked to his conquests, and in Spanish Catholic tradition as a patron of engineers, of those who hold governing office, and of families.
