Biography

Short Description

Ferdinand III of Castile, known in Spanish as Fernando III el Santo, was King of Castile from 1217 and King of León from 1230, and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. He was born in the Kingdom of León around the beginning of the thirteenth century, the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. Through his mother he was the grandson of Alfonso VIII of Castile and of Eleanor, daughter of Henry II of England. The early years of his life were marked by the complex dynastic politics of the Leonese and Castilian courts. In 1217, after the death of the child-king Henry I of Castile, Berenguela was recognized as queen of Castile and at once transferred her rights to Ferdinand. Alfonso IX of León, who had hoped to assert his own claims in Castile, opposed his son’s accession, and there was a period of tension and even warfare between father and son before Ferdinand’s position in Castile was secured.

Upon the death of Alfonso IX in 1230, Ferdinand inherited León, despite his father’s attempts to leave the kingdom to the daughters of an earlier marriage. The resulting union of Castile and León under one monarch ended a long history of partitions and created a dominant Christian power in Iberia. Ferdinand married Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen, called Beatrice of Swabia in Castile, a member of the German royal house, and after her death he married Joan of Dammartin, heiress of Ponthieu. Both marriages produced children; the eldest surviving son of the first marriage, Alfonso, succeeded him as Alfonso X. Ferdinand’s court became a center of royal administration, and he confirmed or granted numerous municipal charters (fueros). He supported the military orders, especially Santiago, Calatrava, and Alcántara, which played a major role in the frontier wars, and he began the building of the Gothic cathedral of Burgos.

Ferdinand’s reputation as a warrior-king rests on the series of campaigns that pushed the Christian-Muslim frontier far to the south. In 1236 his forces entered Córdoba, a symbolic as well as strategic prize. Over the following years he reduced other Andalusian strongholds; Jaén was taken in 1246 after a siege, and in 1248, following a long blockade by land and river, Seville surrendered. The Muslim ruler of Murcia accepted Castilian overlordship. These conquests brought a large Muslim and Jewish population under Christian rule; Ferdinand’s policy combined military occupation, the granting of lands to nobles, churchmen, and settlers from the north, and the preservation of some existing communities under their own laws. He converted the principal mosque of Seville into a cathedral and promoted the cult of Saint Isidore of Seville.

In the later medieval and early modern tradition Ferdinand was portrayed as a model of the Christian king: personally austere, devoted to the Mass and to the Virgin Mary, and concerned for justice toward the poor. Hagiographical accounts describe him as a tertiary of the Franciscan order. He died in Seville in 1252 and was buried in the cathedral there, where his remains, later placed in a silver shrine, became a focus of royal and popular devotion. Formal canonization came only in 1671, when Pope Clement X inscribed him in the catalogue of saints. His feast is celebrated on 30 May. He is regarded as a patron of the city of Seville, of engineers (particularly in the Spanish military tradition), of governors, magistrates, and rulers, and of various other groups and places that have taken him as their advocate.
