Biography

Short Description

Saint Fermin (also Fermín, Firmin, or Firminus) is a Christian saint whose cult is centered on Pamplona in Navarre and on Amiens in northern France. Medieval hagiography presents him as a native of Pamplona who became that city’s first bishop and later died a martyr at Amiens. The detailed life story was elaborated between the eighth and twelfth centuries. Modern historians treat it as largely legendary, while allowing that a martyr named Firminus may have been venerated at Amiens from an early date. There is no contemporary third-century evidence that Pamplona already had a bishop, or that a Pamplonan missionary was executed in Gaul.

According to the legend, Fermin was born in Roman Pompaelo to a family of senatorial rank. His parents, often named Firmus (or Firmo) and Eugenia, were pagans of high standing. They were converted by Honestus, a disciple of Saturninus, the first bishop of Toulouse. Fermin himself is said to have been baptized by Saturninus in Pamplona, in a baptistery later identified with a crypt in the city. As a young man he went to Toulouse, was ordained priest, and returned to Pamplona as its first bishop—some versions claim at the age of twenty-four. After preaching in Navarre he undertook a missionary journey into Gaul.

In Gaul he is described as preaching in several cities before reaching Amiens. There he converted a number of prominent inhabitants. During a persecution of Christians, traditionally placed under Diocletian around 303, he was arrested, imprisoned, and beheaded on 25 September. A pious woman recovered the body and gave it burial at Amiens. In later centuries the bishops of Amiens claimed to have rediscovered his relics; Amiens Cathedral became the principal shrine of Saint Firmin the Martyr. Local calendars sometimes distinguish this martyr from a later bishop of Amiens called Firmin the Confessor.

The cult of Fermin in Pamplona is clearly attested only from the twelfth century. In 1186 Bishop Pedro de Artajona obtained relics from Amiens, after which a chapel and later a church were dedicated to the saint. Fermin became co-patron of the kingdom of Navarre (later sharing that role with Saint Francis Xavier) and the principal patron of Pamplona. His feast on 7 July, which commemorates the translation of relics rather than the traditional martyrdom date of 25 September still kept at Amiens, developed into the famous San Fermín festival, including the running of the bulls. Saturninus of Toulouse was a genuine third-century martyr, but the Pamplona–Amiens biography served mainly to give medieval Navarre an apostolic-era founder and to link its church with Toulouse and with the relics of Amiens.
