Biography

Short Description

Fernando Huidobro Polanco was a Spanish Jesuit priest born in Santander, in northern Spain, in 1903. He entered the Society of Jesus and followed the order’s customary course of formation in the humanities, philosophy, and theology before ordination. Relatively little about his family origins or childhood has passed into widely available historical literature; what is recorded consistently identifies him as a Cantabrian who became a member of the Jesuits in the early twentieth century and was still a young priest when Spain collapsed into civil war.

After the military rising of July 1936 he volunteered as a chaplain with Carlist requeté units fighting on the Nationalist side. In that role he accompanied combatants, celebrated Mass, heard confessions, and attended the wounded and dying under front-line conditions. His ministry is documented in Jesuit and Carlist commemorative sources as that of a priest who chose to remain with soldiers rather than withdraw from the combat zones.

Huidobro was killed in April 1937 on the Madrid front while serving as chaplain. He was thirty-four years old. His death belongs to the larger catastrophe of the Spanish Civil War, in which thousands of clergy perished—the great majority as victims of anticlerical violence in the Republican zone—though Huidobro himself fell as a military chaplain attached to Nationalist forces.

He was not beatified or canonized, and he has no feast day or official patronage in the universal liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. Memory of him survives mainly in specialized studies of the Society of Jesus during the Civil War and in regional notices of requeté chaplains. Surviving references treat him as a priest who died in the exercise of his ministry rather than as a figure of widespread popular cult.
