Biography

Short Description

Saint Ferrutio (also known as Ferrutius, Ferjeux, or Ferruccio) was an early Christian missionary and martyr associated with the evangelization of eastern Gaul. He is almost always commemorated together with Saint Ferreolus, with whom the traditional account links him as a companion, and in some versions as a brother. According to the legendary Acts, Ferrutio came from Asia Minor and was sent, along with Ferreolus, by Saint Irenaeus of Lyons to preach among the Sequani around the Roman city of Vesontio, later Besançon. In this tradition Ferrutio is identified as a deacon and Ferreolus as a priest. Their activity is placed in the late second and early third centuries, though no contemporary document records Ferrutio’s birth, family, or early life, and the Asian origin itself belongs to later hagiography rather than to independently verified history.

The two missionaries are said to have labored for a considerable time in and around Vesontio, converting many of the local population and laying the foundations of the church that would become the diocese of Besançon. Their success drew the attention of the civil power. They were arrested in a persecution of Christians and brought before a judge named Claudius. Having refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods, they were tortured; later recensions of the story include the cutting out of their tongues among other torments. They were finally beheaded. Traditional dating assigns the martyrdom to the year 212, in the reign of Caracalla, but that year is derived from the legendary cycle rather than from an independent chronicle, and modern historians treat the precise chronology with caution.

The written Acts of Ferreolus and Ferrutio are generally regarded as legendary. They appear to have been composed centuries after the events they describe, and details such as a long mission dispatched by Irenaeus (who died around 202) raise chronological difficulties. Even so, the cult of the two martyrs at Besançon is of real antiquity. Their relics were honored at a shrine on the hill of Saint-Ferjeux, southwest of the city, where a basilica was later built over the traditional place of burial. In the Middle Ages they were firmly established as the principal patrons of Besançon and of its diocese, a patronage that has continued into the modern period.

Ferrutio and Ferreolus are commemorated jointly on 16 June in the Roman Martyrology, which names them as a priest and a deacon sent by Irenaeus and put to death by beheading after various torments. The basilica that bears their names remains a place of pilgrimage. Beyond the clerical role assigned to him in the tradition and his death as a martyr at Besançon, almost nothing about Ferrutio’s personal circumstances can be verified from sources that meet a strict historical standard.
