Biography

Short Description

Saint Ferrutius (also rendered Ferrucius) is a Christian martyr whose cult is tied to Mogontiacum, the Roman fortress-city that became Mainz, in the province of Germania Superior. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary documents. Later hagiographical tradition presents him as a Roman soldier stationed at Mainz who embraced Christianity and, during the imperial persecutions of the early fourth century, refused the pagan sacrifices demanded of the army. He was imprisoned and, according to the same legendary accounts, died of starvation. The year often attached to his death in modern notices is conventional rather than attested; the Roman Martyrology itself gives no date of death, only the place.

The earliest firm witness to his veneration is liturgical. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 28 October with the brief entry locating the martyr at Mainz. No authentic passio from the age of the persecutions survives. The narrative details of military service, conversion, and death by hunger belong to medieval legend. Historians of the cult of the saints generally accept that a local martyr named Ferrutius was honoured at Mainz from an early period, while treating the biographical particulars as unverifiable.

In the late eighth century the relics were translated from Mainz to Bleidenstadt in the Taunus. Archbishop Lull of Mainz, a disciple of Saint Boniface, founded a Benedictine monastery there about 782 and placed it under the martyr’s patronage. The Abbey of Saint Ferrutius became the principal centre of the cult. It later became a collegiate foundation and was secularized in the early nineteenth century; the former abbey church continues as a parish church. Ferrutius remains the patron of Bleidenstadt, now part of Taunusstein in Hesse.

No wider, securely documented list of patronages appears in the major hagiographical collections. Ferrutius was never the object of a formal papal canonization; his cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type, resting on immemorial veneration and insertion in the martyrology. He is not known to have belonged to a religious order, and there is no reliable evidence concerning marriage or children. His historical outline is faint, but the translation of his relics and the dedication of the Bleidenstadt monastery shaped the religious geography of the Middle Rhine and the Taunus for more than a thousand years.
