Biography

Short Description

Fidelis of Sigmaringen was born Markus Roy (also rendered Mark Rey) in 1577 at Sigmaringen, in the County of Hohenzollern in Swabia, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He was the son of Johannes Roy, burgomaster of the town. After early schooling he studied at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, where he took doctorates in philosophy and in civil and canon law. For several years he accompanied a party of young Swabian nobles as their tutor on an educational journey through France, Spain, and Italy, visiting universities and major Catholic shrines. On his return he practiced as an advocate, chiefly at Colmar in Alsace. He acquired a reputation for refusing unjust cases and for defending the poor without fee. Contemporary accounts state that the venality and partisanship he encountered in the courts led him to leave the legal profession. He disposed of his property in favour of the poor and of ecclesiastical institutions before entering religious life.

In 1612 he entered the novitiate of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin at Freiburg and received the religious name Fidelis. Already highly educated, he was ordained to the priesthood and thereafter served as guardian of Capuchin houses at Rheinfelden, Feldkirch, and Freiburg. He became known as a preacher and confessor in Swabia and in the Swiss lands, tended the sick during outbreaks of plague, and wrote spiritual and controversial works directed against Reformed doctrine. His personal life followed the austerity associated with the early Capuchin reform.

In the early 1620s the Grisons (Graubünden) were torn by the conflict later called the Bündner Wirren, in which Habsburg Austria, the Three Leagues, and Catholic and Protestant factions struggled for control of the Alpine valleys and passes. After Austrian troops occupied the Prättigau, Capuchin missionaries were sent to restore Catholic worship in parishes that had adopted the Reformation. Fidelis was placed at the head of this mission, which was associated with the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, founded in 1622. He preached in several villages of the Prättigau, often with a military escort, which led many local Protestants to regard him as an instrument of Habsburg recatholicization as well as of Catholic restoration.

On 24 April 1622, after celebrating Mass at Seewis im Prättigau, he was attacked by a band of armed Reformed peasants. Traditional accounts hold that he was offered his life if he would renounce the Catholic faith and that he refused. He was struck down and killed. Catholic authorities treated the death as martyrdom from the outset. His body was taken first to Grüsch and then to Feldkirch, where it was buried in the church of the Capuchins. Fidelis was beatified by Pope Benedict XIII in 1729 and canonized by Pope Benedict XIV in 1746. His feast is kept on 24 April. He is invoked as a patron of lawyers and of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, and he is remembered as that congregation’s first martyr.
