Biography

Short Description

Saint Firmin, known in Latin as Firminus and in Spanish as Fermín or San Fermín, is a Christian saint venerated as a bishop and martyr, above all at Amiens in Picardy and at Pamplona in Navarre. Medieval hagiography presents him as a native of Pamplona, born in the third century to a senatorial family; his father is named Firmo or Firmus and his mother Eugenia in the later legends. No contemporary inscription, chronicle, or martyrology from the third or fourth century independently confirms these particulars. The written Passio and related Acta that circulate under his name were composed centuries after the events they purport to describe, and historians therefore treat the biographical outline as a pious legend that grew around an early local cult rather than as a recoverable life history.

According to that tradition, the evangelization of Navarre was begun by Saint Saturninus (Sernin) of Toulouse and his disciple Honestus. Honestus is said to have converted the young Firmin, after which Saturninus baptized him and, in time, ordained him deacon and priest. Firmin then preached in his native region before crossing into Gaul. The itinerary assigned to him in the legends includes Agen, Anjou, and Beauvais, among other places, and is constructed in the conventional pattern of a missionary vita. These stages cannot be verified independently and likely served to link his cult with other Gallic churches.

The same sources make Firmin the first bishop of Amiens, the Roman city of Samarobriva in Belgica. They describe numerous conversions, including that of a prominent Roman named Faustinian and members of his household, and the organization of a Christian community in the city. Hostility from pagan priests and magistrates follows. Firmin is arrested, imprisoned, and finally decapitated. Traditional dates for the martyrdom cluster in the late third century, often on 25 September, and are sometimes connected with the persecution under Aurelian or with the Great Persecution under Diocletian; none of these datings rests on a contemporary record. A distinct figure, Firmin the Confessor, is remembered as a later bishop of Amiens who died in peace; confusion between the martyr and the confessor has affected both the calendar and the history of the relics.

Devotion to Saint Firmin at Amiens is attested in the early medieval period. In the seventh century Bishop Salvius of Amiens is credited with the inventio, or discovery, of the martyr's body, after which the relics were enshrined and became a centre of pilgrimage. They were later associated with the cathedral of Notre-Dame at Amiens. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Firmin as bishop and martyr at Amiens on 25 September; a feast of the translation of relics was kept on 13 January. In Navarre the saint is honoured as San Fermín, patron of Pamplona and of the old kingdom and later province of Navarre, with a principal local feast on 7 July. That July celebration, already medieval, developed into the well-known festival of San Fermín, which includes religious processions as well as the running of the bulls.

Because the surviving narratives are late, stereotyped, and uncorroborated, a cautious historical judgment is limited. It is reasonable to hold that Amiens possessed from an early date the cult of a bishop or martyr named Firmin, that relics believed to be his were venerated there by the seventh century, and that the cult was subsequently adopted and elaborated at Pamplona. The Pamplona birth, the senatorial parentage, the precise missionary circuit, and the exact year of death belong to legend. Firmin was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his sainthood rests on ancient popular and liturgical cult. He is not recorded as a pope or patriarch, nor as a member of a later religious order, and nothing historically reliable is known of any marriage or children.
