Biography

Short Description

The Five Martyr Brothers (Latin: Quinque Fratres; Polish: Pięciu Braci Męczenników) were a group of Camaldolese hermits slain in the Duchy of Poland in 1003. The community consisted of two Italians, Benedict of Benevento and John, formed in the eremitical life by Saint Romuald, and three Slavs who joined them in Poland: Isaac and his brother Matthew, together with Christinus (also called Krystyn or Christian), who served the hermitage as cook. Their martyrdom is dated to the night of 10–11 November 1003. Almost all that is known of them derives from the Vita quinque fratrum, composed about 1008 by Saint Bruno of Querfurt, a missionary bishop who had lived with Benedict and John in Italy and who wrote while preparing his own mission among the Prussians.

Benedict, associated with Benevento, and John had belonged to the circle of hermits gathered by Romuald at Pereum near Ravenna, a foundation closely linked to the Emperor Otto III and to an ideal of contemplative life that could also serve the evangelization of pagan peoples. After Otto’s death in 1002, the two monks travelled to the court of Duke Bolesław I of Poland (Bolesław Chrobry). With the duke’s support they established a hermitage in Greater Poland, a site traditionally identified with the forests near Międzyrzecz. There they were joined by Isaac, Matthew, and Christinus. The little community followed a severe Camaldolese pattern of prayer, fasting, and manual work, while remaining open to a future apostolate, possibly among the still-pagan Prussians. Near-contemporary sources present them as pioneers of organized eremitical life on Polish soil rather than as diocesan clergy or members of a large cenobitic abbey.

According to Bruno’s narrative, rumours that Bolesław had deposited treasure or precious liturgical objects at the hermitage attracted a band of robbers. On the night of 10–11 November 1003 the attackers broke in and killed all five hermits. Bruno records that the murderers afterwards met with various calamities, which he and the Polish church interpreted as divine retribution. Duke Bolesław recovered the bodies and fostered the martyrs’ cult. The Vita quinque fratrum, written only a few years later, already treats them as saints and remains one of the most important literary witnesses to the early Piast church and to the missionary-eremitical spirituality associated with Romuald, Otto III, and Bruno himself.

Veneration of the Five Brothers took root in Poland in the eleventh century and continued through the Middle Ages. Their feast is entered on 12 November in the Roman Martyrology. Later tradition located a principal shrine and relics at Kazimierz Biskupi in Greater Poland, where a church came to be dedicated to them, although the original place of burial was the hermitage itself. Because they died as a group and because the surviving sources are essentially a single hagiographical text, individual birth years, family backgrounds (apart from Benedict’s Beneventan origin and the Slavic identity of Isaac, Matthew, and Christinus), and many personal details remain unknown. They are remembered as early martyrs of the Polish church and as representatives of the Camaldolese missionary-eremitical ideal in East Central Europe around the year 1000.
