Biography

Short Description

Flavia Domitilla was a Roman noblewoman of the Flavian house who lived in the first century. She was the granddaughter of the emperor Vespasian through his daughter Flavia Domitilla the Younger, and therefore the niece of the emperors Titus and Domitian. Her mother had died before Vespasian obtained the purple in 69, and no early source records Domitilla’s place or date of birth, her childhood, or any public role before her marriage. As a woman of the imperial family she belonged to the highest rank of Roman society in the decades when the Flavians were consolidating power after the civil wars of 69.

She married her kinsman Titus Flavius Clemens, a grandson of Vespasian’s brother Titus Flavius Sabinus. Clemens held the ordinary consulship with Domitian in 95. The couple had at least two sons, whom Domitian named as intended heirs and caused to be called Vespasian and Domitian; the rhetorician Quintilian was appointed to tutor them. These arrangements put Domitilla and her husband at the centre of succession politics in Domitian’s later years, a period marked by the emperor’s suspicion of the aristocracy and of any departure from traditional Roman religious practice.

In 95, shortly after the consulship, Domitian had Clemens put to death. Suetonius, writing in the early second century, says Clemens was killed on a very slight suspicion. Cassius Dio, in the early third century, reports that Clemens was executed and that his wife Flavia Domitilla was banished to the island of Pandateria (modern Ventotene) on a charge of atheism, a charge Dio links with many others who had drifted into Jewish ways. Christian writers give a related but not identical account. Eusebius of Caesarea, in the early fourth century, states that in the fifteenth year of Domitian a Flavia Domitilla, described as niece of the consul Flavius Clemens, was exiled among other Christians to the island of Pontia (modern Ponza). Jerome later claimed to have seen on Pontia the cell in which Domitilla had endured a long exile for the faith. Pandateria and Pontia are neighbouring islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, both long used for high-ranking imperial exiles, which may explain part of the discrepancy in the sources.

Historians continue to debate whether Dio and Eusebius describe one woman or two, and whether the atheism and Jewish customs mentioned by Dio should be read as conversion to Judaism, to Christianity, or to some Judaizing practice that pagan observers did not clearly distinguish. No contemporary Christian text or inscription from the 90s names her. What can be said with confidence is that a Flavian woman of this name was disgraced and deported in the last year of Domitian’s reign, that her husband was executed, and that by the fourth century churches in Rome and the East remembered a Flavia Domitilla as a Christian confessor of that persecution. Her later fate is unknown. Nerva’s accession in 96 reversed many of Domitian’s sentences, but no source records whether Domitilla was recalled, died in exile, or lived into the second century. Precise years of birth and death are not preserved.

Later Christian tradition went well beyond these meagre notices. The so-called Acts of Nereus and Achilleus, a legendary passion of the fifth or sixth century, recast Domitilla as a consecrated virgin, niece rather than wife of Clemens, who refused marriage to a pagan suitor and was exiled and in some versions martyred; her chamberlains Nereus and Achilleus were said to have been beheaded. That narrative is not historically reliable, but it shaped medieval cult. Underground cemeteries on the Via Ardeatina in Rome, developed from the second century on land associated with the Flavian family, came to be called the Catacombs of Domitilla. She has been venerated as a saint in both East and West, though the historical wife of Clemens and the legendary virgin of the Acts have often been conflated. In the West she has commonly been commemorated on 7 May; she has also been associated with the 12 May feast of Nereus and Achilleus. No early source records a burial place that can be verified.
