Biography

Short Description

Flavius Latinus, also known simply as Latinus or Saint Latinus of Brescia, is venerated in the Catholic Church as an early bishop of the church of Brescia (Roman Brixia) in northern Italy. Later episcopal catalogues of that see place him among the first generations of local bishops and commonly present him as the successor of Saint Viator. Popular hagiographical notices often call him the third bishop of Brescia, though the numbering depends on how the equally poorly attested names Anathalon, Clateus, and Viator are counted. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 24 March with the brief notice of a bishop of Brescia; it does not style him a martyr. No contemporary inscription, letter, or conciliar act names him, and nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, education, or the length of his episcopate.

The Christian community of Brescia is historically obscure before late antiquity. Medieval and early modern compilers, working from local tradition and from a desire to push the origins of the diocese back toward the apostolic age, constructed a first- and second-century succession in which Saint Anathalon was sometimes associated with Saint Barnabas or with the early church of Milan, Saint Clateus was presented as a martyr, and Viator and then Latinus followed. In that reconstructed narrative Latinus is occasionally called a disciple of Anathalon. Dates sometimes attached to his career—an accession in the later first century and a death around 115—come from these later catalogues rather than from independent evidence. They should not be treated as verified chronology. The gentile name Flavius, if it preserves a genuine onomastic memory rather than a later embellishment, would be consistent with a romanized notable of the Flavian or post-Flavian period, but it cannot by itself authenticate or date his life.

Whether he died a natural death or as a martyr remains uncertain. A number of modern devotional summaries call him bishop and martyr, yet the martyrological entry that underpins his cult names him only as bishop, and no authentic passio is known. His death is traditionally located at Brescia, the city of his see. Place of burial is not securely recorded in sources that can be checked. As with many pre-Congregation saints of Cisalpine Gaul, recognition of his sanctity rests on ancient local cult and inclusion in the martyrology rather than on a formal papal process of canonization or beatification.

Veneration of Latinus remained essentially local. He is not among the principal patrons of Brescia, a dignity long associated with the martyrs Faustinus and Jovita, and no stable list of patronages—places, professions, illnesses, or causes—is attached to his name in standard hagiographical reference works. His feast on 24 March continues in martyrological calendars. Beyond the traditional claim that he shepherded the church of Brescia in the early Christian centuries, the details of his life, death, and burial are lost, and a careful account must remain honest about how little can be verified.
