Biography

Short Description

Saint Florentina, also known as Florentia, was a Christian consecrated virgin and monastic superior who lived in Visigothic Hispania in the later sixth and early seventh centuries. She was born in Cartagena, then an important port in the province of Carthaginensis, into a prominent Hispano-Roman family. Her father, Severianus, is described in the sources as a man of high rank; her mother is named in later tradition as Theodora or Turtura. While Florentina and her siblings were still young, the family left Cartagena. The departure is generally connected with the political and military disruption that accompanied the Byzantine establishment of the province of Spania in southeastern Iberia in the mid-sixth century. The family established itself in the region of Seville, which thereafter became the principal stage of their public and ecclesiastical lives.

Florentina was sister to three bishops who were themselves later honored as saints: Leander, who became metropolitan of Seville and played a major role in the conversion of the Visigothic kings from Arianism to Nicene Christianity; Isidore, Leander's successor at Seville, encyclopedist and doctor of the Church; and Fulgentius, bishop of Astigi (modern Écija). Contemporary and near-contemporary writings, especially those of Leander and Isidore, form the main historical basis for knowledge of the family. Florentina herself embraced a life of consecrated virginity. Leander addressed to her a substantial treatise, De institutione virginum et contemptu mundi, which served as a rule and spiritual directory for her and for the community of virgins associated with her. The work, which survives, advises on enclosure, liturgical prayer, reading of Scripture, humility, and the rejection of worldly display; it is one of the most important documents for female monasticism in sixth-century Spain.

Tradition identifies Florentina as abbess of a monastery, often located at or near Écija, the episcopal city of her brother Fulgentius. Later medieval and early modern hagiography greatly magnified her authority, asserting that she governed dozens of convents and as many as a thousand nuns. Such numbers are not supported by sixth- or seventh-century evidence and should be regarded as legendary. The date of her death is not recorded with precision; it is customarily placed in the early seventh century, frequently around 612. She was venerated as a saint in Spain from an early period. The Roman Martyrology and Spanish liturgical calendars assign her feast to 20 June.

Devotion to Florentina remained largely regional. Relics attributed to her and to Fulgentius have been associated since the later Middle Ages with the town of Berzocana in Extremadura, where a church is dedicated to the two saints and where she is honored as a local patron. Other relic claims have been made at Cartagena, her native city. Together with her three brothers she is counted among the patron saints of Cartagena. Beyond these local cults, Florentina is remembered in the history of the Visigothic church as a member of an exceptional family of bishops and as the recipient of Leander's rule for virgins, a text that continued to be read as a witness to early Spanish monastic ideals. Precise details of her biography remain scarce; what can be said with confidence rests chiefly on the family context supplied by Leander and Isidore and on the long liturgical memory of the Spanish church.
