Biography

Short Description

Folcwin (also Folcuin or Folquin; Latin Folcuinus or Folquinus) was a ninth-century Frankish churchman and bishop of Thérouanne, the ancient episcopal see of the Morini in the coastal plain of what is now the Pas-de-Calais in northern France. He belonged to the high Frankish aristocracy and was a kinsman of the Carolingian dynasty. The principal narrative source for his life is the Vita Folcuini episcopi Morinensis, composed in the later tenth century by his relative Folcuin of Lobbes. According to that Life, Folcwin was the son of Hieronymus (Jerome), an illegitimate son of Charles Martel, the Frankish mayor of the palace. The genealogy was written well after Folcwin’s death, but it is consistent with the family’s later standing and is generally treated as plausible by historians of the Carolingian elite. No contemporary record preserves his year or place of birth, and later round figures sometimes offered for his birth are conjectural.

He received the education typical of a noble destined for high ecclesiastical office, including formation associated with the royal court in the time of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. He was closely connected with the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bertin (Sithiu) near Saint-Omer, the chief monastic house of the region and a frequent source of clergy for the neighbouring see. In 816 or 817 he became bishop of Thérouanne, which he governed for nearly four decades, through the later years of Louis the Pious and into the reign of Charles the Bald. That long episcopate coincided with the political partition of the Frankish empire and with growing Viking pressure on the Channel coast, both of which affected the security of churches and monastic property in the diocese of the Morini.

As bishop, Folcwin took part in the conciliar and political life of the West Frankish church. Traditional accounts associate him with assemblies of the 830s, including gatherings at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle). Outside the later Vita, which mixes recollection with hagiographic convention, the surviving evidence for individual acts is limited. He is remembered for defending the rights and estates of his church, for sustained cooperation with Saint-Bertin, and for the ordinary pastoral government of a diocese exposed to political disorder and maritime attack. No source records a spouse or children, in keeping with a clerical and monastic career from youth.

Folcwin died on 14 December 855 and was buried at the abbey of Saint-Bertin. A local cult developed at his tomb. In the tenth century Folcuin of Lobbes wrote the Life that recorded miracles and fixed his reputation for holiness among the monks of Sithiu and the clergy of Thérouanne. He has been venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, with a feast on 14 December; the cult is of long standing and belongs to the pre-congregation period, without a recorded formal canonization by a named pope. Devotion remained especially tied to Saint-Bertin and to the old diocese of Thérouanne, whose cathedral city was later destroyed and whose succession passed to Saint-Omer. Beyond that regional memory, no well-attested list of specific patronages survives.
