Biography

Short Description

Saint Fortunata is venerated in the Catholic Church as a virgin martyr associated with Caesarea in Palestine. The principal ancient notice of her is the Roman Martyrology, which on 14 October commemorates her together with three brothers, named in various recensions as Evasius or Evaristus, Carponius, and Priscianus. The entry reflects a tradition that a family group of Christians suffered death for the faith in that city. Caesarea Maritima was the Roman provincial capital of Palaestina and an important center of imperial administration and of early Christian life, and is therefore a plausible setting for martyrdoms during the empire-wide persecution that began under Diocletian in the early fourth century.

No contemporary historical document, court record, or authentic passio survives to confirm the details of her life or death. Later martyrologies and popular accounts often assign the year 303 because that was the year of Diocletian’s first edict against the Christians, but the date remains conjectural. Medieval and baroque hagiographical texts supply the usual legendary motifs of a young woman of distinguished birth, a refusal to sacrifice to the gods, various torments, and a final execution. These narratives cannot be verified and should be treated as pious elaborations rather than history. The name Fortunata was borne by more than one martyr in North Africa and elsewhere, which has produced confusion in the transmission of her cult.

From late antiquity or the early Middle Ages onward, relics attributed to Saint Fortunata were claimed by churches in southern Italy, especially Naples. Subsequent centuries saw further translations. In the eighteenth century a body taken from the Roman catacombs and given the name of Saint Fortunata was enshrined at Baucina in Sicily, where she is still honored as principal patroness. Whether that catacomb body has any connection with the Palestinian martyr of the martyrology is unknown; the practice of naming anonymous catacomb remains after well-known saints was common in that period. Consequently, local feast days, processions, and patronages attached to Santa Fortunata in Italy may refer to distinct historical or legendary figures that later devotion has tended to merge.

In the liturgy she is remembered simply as a virgin and martyr. She has not been the subject of a modern canonical process of beatification or canonization; her cult belongs to the ancient veneration of the early martyrs. Iconographically she appears as a youthful female saint holding the palm branch, sometimes accompanied by her brothers. Beyond the liturgical commemoration on 14 October and the local observances in a few Italian towns, little else can be stated with confidence. The scarcity of reliable evidence is typical of many names preserved in the old martyrologies, whose historical kernel, if any, is now largely irrecoverable.
