Biography

Short Description

Francesc Gil de Frederic, known in Spanish as Francisco Gil de Federich, was a Catalan Dominican priest and missionary of the eighteenth century who died as a martyr in Tonkin, in what is now northern Vietnam. He was born in 1702 in Tortosa, a city on the Ebro in Catalonia, then under the Spanish monarchy. Drawn to the religious life, he entered the Order of Preachers and was ordained a priest. Like many Spanish Dominicans of his generation, he volunteered for the overseas missions that the order sustained from the Philippines, which served as the principal base for Dominican work in East and Southeast Asia.

From the Philippines he was sent on to the Tonkin mission, a region where Catholic communities had existed since the seventeenth century but where the faith was subject to intermittent and sometimes severe persecution. In the 1730s he worked among Vietnamese Christians, celebrating the sacraments, instructing converts, and supporting a church that often depended on clandestine ministry. The political situation in Tonkin under the Trịnh lords made the position of European missionaries precarious; edicts against Christianity were periodically enforced, and foreign priests were particular targets.

In the later 1730s Gil de Frederic was arrested during a campaign against Christians. He remained in prison for a number of years, a period during which he is reported to have continued to exercise his priestly ministry among fellow detainees and to have refused conditions that would have required him to abandon his faith or his missionary identity. On 22 January 1745 he was executed by beheading, together with his Dominican confrere Mateo Alonso de Leciniana. Their deaths formed part of a longer sequence of martyrdoms that marked the Vietnamese church in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Devotion to Gil de Frederic developed within the Dominican order and among Vietnamese Catholics. He was beatified by Pope Pius X in 1906 as one of a group of martyrs of Tonkin. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him among the one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam, whose collective feast is kept on 24 November. He is venerated as a missionary martyr of the Dominican order and, with his companions, as a patron of Vietnam. Historical sources for his inner life and day-to-day ministry remain limited, as is often the case for missionaries who died far from Europe; the outline of his origin in Tortosa, his Dominican vocation, his work in Tonkin, his long imprisonment, and his execution in 1745 is nevertheless firmly established in the acts of beatification and in standard hagiographical accounts.
