Biography
Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio was born on 7 September 1912 in Piran (Italian: Pirano), a coastal town in Istria that then formed part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the First World War the town and the surrounding Julian March passed to the Kingdom of Italy. He received a Catholic education and entered the seminary of the Diocese of Trieste-Capodistria, preparing for the diocesan priesthood rather than for life in a religious order. He was ordained a priest in 1936, at the age of twenty-four, and began pastoral work among the Italian-speaking communities of Istria.
In the following years he served as parish priest of Villa Gardossi (Gradišče) in rural Istria. His ministry unfolded during the Second World War, when control of the peninsula shifted among Italian, German, and finally Yugoslav forces. After May 1945 the area came under Yugoslav military administration. The new communist authorities treated remaining Italian clergy as obstacles both to political consolidation and to pressure on the Italian population. Bonifacio continued to celebrate the sacraments and to remain with his parishioners despite mounting threats.
On 11 September 1946 he was lured away from his parish, according to testimony later examined in the beatification process, on the pretext of a pastoral emergency. He was seized by a group linked to the Yugoslav secret police, beaten, and killed. His body was never recovered and is believed to have been concealed, possibly in a karst sinkhole of the kind used during the foibe killings that accompanied the Yugoslav takeover of the region. Church authorities subsequently judged that he had been put to death in odium fidei, in hatred of the faith, and therefore that he was a martyr. He was thirty-four years old.
The diocesan inquiry into his life and death was later undertaken at Trieste. After the required historical and theological examination, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the decree on his martyrdom. The beatification rite was celebrated on 4 October 2008 in Piazza Unità d'Italia in Trieste by Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting in the pope's name. Blessed Francesco Bonifacio is commemorated on 11 September. He is remembered especially among Istrian Catholics and among families of the postwar exodus from Istria. Because his remains were never identified, he has no known tomb.
