Biography

Francesco Convertini was born in 1898 at Marinelli, in the municipality of Conversano in the province of Bari in southern Italy, into a modest rural family. As a young man he was conscripted during the First World War and was taken prisoner. After the war he came into contact with the Salesians of Don Bosco and discerned a vocation to religious life and the missions. He entered the Society of St. Francis de Sales, completed his formation, and was ordained a priest. In 1927 he was sent to the Salesian missions in Bengal, then part of British India, and he never returned to Italy.

He spent the rest of his life in the Krishnagar region of what is now West Bengal, serving for nearly five decades as a missionary priest among a population that was overwhelmingly Hindu and Muslim, with only a small Catholic community. He learned Bengali in order to preach, catechize, and speak with ordinary people, and he devoted himself to visiting villages, often under difficult conditions. His work combined pastoral care of the Catholic flock with charitable attention to the poor and the sick, in the spirit of the Salesian charism of Don Bosco.

Convertini occupied no high ecclesiastical office and remained a simple missionary throughout his life. He was remembered for evangelical poverty, personal austerity, humility, and availability to people of every background. Contemporaries described a patient, culturally sensitive presence rather than a career of institutional prominence. He died in Krishnagar in 1976 after almost fifty years of uninterrupted service in India.

A cause for beatification followed. He was declared Venerable, and Pope Francis recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession. Convertini was beatified on 17 November 2017 at a ceremony in Krishnagar, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding as papal legate. He is commemorated especially in the Salesian family and in the Diocese of Krishnagar as a model of missionary perseverance and simplicity.
