Biography

Short Description

Francesco Faà di Bruno was born on 29 March 1825 in Alessandria, then in the Kingdom of Sardinia, into a family of the Piedmontese nobility. He was the son of Luigi, Marquis of Bruno, and Carolina Sappa de' Milanesi. Raised in a Catholic household, he received a classical and scientific education and entered the military academy in Turin. Commissioned as an officer in the army of King Charles Albert of Sardinia, he served on the general staff and took part in the First Italian War of Independence, including the campaign that ended with the Piedmontese defeat at Novara in 1849. Shortly afterward he left active military service, retaining the rank of captain, and turned toward scientific study and a deepening religious vocation.

In the 1850s he studied mathematics in Paris, where he attended the lectures of Augustin-Louis Cauchy and other leading analysts. He earned a doctorate and produced original research that included the well-known formula for the higher derivatives of a composite function that still bears his name, as well as work on elliptic functions and the theory of binary forms. Returning to Piedmont, he taught mathematics at the University of Turin and published both research papers and textbooks. Alongside his academic work he cultivated music and mechanical invention, designing among other devices an apparatus to enable the blind to write and a complex astronomical clock.

The rapid industrialization of Turin confronted him with the insecurity and moral dangers faced by young women who worked long hours in factories and shops. He devoted his personal fortune to founding shelters, schools, and workshops, notably the Opera Pia di Santa Zita, which offered lodging, training, and protection. For years he sought ordination; after repeated delays he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Turin in 1876. As a priest he continued his mathematical teaching and research while expanding his charitable institutions. He established a religious congregation of sisters, the Minim Sisters of Our Lady of Suffrage, whose members undertook the education of girls, the care of the elderly and working women, and prayer for the souls in purgatory. He also directed the building of a church and a prominent campanile in the San Donato quarter of Turin.

Faà di Bruno died in Turin on 27 March 1888, two days before his sixty-third birthday. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 25 September 1988. His remains are preserved in the church of Our Lady of Suffrage that he had caused to be built. He is remembered as a soldier, mathematician, inventor, and priest who joined rigorous intellectual work to a practical apostolate among the urban poor.
