Biography

Short Description

Francesco Fasola was a twentieth-century Italian prelate of the Latin Church who served as Bishop of Caltagirone and later as Archbishop of Messina. He was born in 1891 in Maggiora, a small commune in the province of Novara in Piedmont, in what was then the Kingdom of Italy. He was formed in the seminary of the Diocese of Novara and ordained a priest in 1914. For nearly four decades thereafter he belonged to the secular clergy of that northern Italian diocese, exercising priestly ministry through the First World War, the Fascist period, the Second World War, and the early Italian Republic. He is not recorded as a member of any religious institute.

In 1953 he was appointed Bishop of Caltagirone, a diocese in the interior of eastern Sicily, and received episcopal consecration in 1954. His years at Caltagirone belonged to the ordinary pastoral government of a relatively modest Sicilian see in the decade before the Second Vatican Council, in a region still marked by rural poverty and traditional Catholic practice. In 1963 he was transferred to the metropolitan see of Messina, becoming archbishop of that historic church on the Strait of Messina in northeastern Sicily.

As Archbishop of Messina he took part in the Second Vatican Council and was responsible for introducing its liturgical and pastoral reforms locally. In the mid-1970s the Holy See reorganized the ecclesiastical map of the area, uniting Messina with the former dioceses of Lipari (the Aeolian Islands) and Santa Lucia del Mela; Fasola thus became archbishop of the combined Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. He resigned the pastoral government of the archdiocese in 1977, in line with the age limit for diocesan bishops established in that era.

He remained in Messina and died there in 1988. He never held the papacy or a patriarchal see. As a Latin-rite diocesan priest and bishop he lived under the discipline of clerical celibacy and is not documented as having had a spouse or children. No completed cause of beatification or canonization is associated with him, and he has no assigned feast day or recognized patronages in the Catholic liturgical books. Surviving notices of his life are those of a diocesan ordinary of the conciliar and immediate post-conciliar period rather than of a figure of widespread cult or extensive published writings.
