Biography

Short Description

Francesco Gonzaga was born on 31 March 1546 in Gazzuolo, in the Duchy of Mantua in northern Italy. He belonged to a cadet branch of the House of Gonzaga, the dynasty that ruled the duchy. Despite his noble birth he entered the Order of Friars Minor of the Observance and was formed in the Franciscan tradition of preaching, study, and poverty. He gained a reputation within the order for learning, administrative ability, and personal austerity.

In 1579 the Franciscan general chapter elected him Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, an office he held until 1587. As head of the Observant Franciscans he worked to consolidate the reform of the order in the period after the Council of Trent, visiting provinces and seeking to uphold regular discipline. His prominence as minister general made him a natural candidate for higher ecclesiastical office when the papacy looked for prelates who combined noble standing with a reputation for religious seriousness.

Pope Sixtus V appointed him bishop of Cefalù in Sicily in 1587. In the early 1590s he served as apostolic nuncio to France, a difficult mission at the close of the French Wars of Religion. In 1593 he was named bishop of Pavia and almost immediately transferred to Mantua, the diocese of his native territory. He occupied the see of Mantua from 1593 until 1620, spanning the later years of Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga and the opening of the following ducal reigns.

During his long episcopate he sought to apply the disciplinary and pastoral decrees of the Council of Trent in Mantua. He was concerned with the formation of the clergy, the instruction of the faithful, and works of charity, and he retained a Franciscan simplicity of life even as bishop in a major court city. He died in Mantua on 2 March 1620.
