Biography

Francesco Pianzola was born on 5 October 1881 in Sartirana Lomellina, a small agricultural community in the Lomellina district of the Province of Pavia in Lombardy, northern Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. The area was defined by rice cultivation, tenant farming, and a largely rural Catholic culture. He came from a farming family of modest means and received his early religious formation in the local parish. Sensing a vocation to the priesthood, he entered the seminary of the Diocese of Vigevano, the diocese to which Sartirana Lomellina belonged. He completed his philosophical and theological studies there and was ordained a priest on 16 March 1907 by Bishop Pietro Berruti of Vigevano. He remained a diocesan priest of that see for the rest of his life and never entered a male religious order.

After ordination he undertook pastoral ministry among farm laborers, the rural poor, and young people of the Lomellina, a region then marked by seasonal labor, social tension, and the first stages of industrial change. He became known as a preacher and catechist who sought to bring sacramental life and Christian instruction into that setting. His spirituality was centered on the Eucharist and on devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially under the title of the Immaculate. Contemporaries remembered him as an approachable priest who combined doctrinal teaching with practical charity toward workers and families on the margins of parish life.

In 1919 he founded a congregation of women religious, the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Queen of Peace (Suore Missionarie dell'Immacolata Regina della Pace), sometimes called the Pianzoline after their founder. The sisters were to live a simple religious life and to work in parishes, catechesis, education, and works of mercy in rural and working-class districts. Pianzola guided the institute through its first decades, seeking ecclesiastical recognition while continuing ordinary parish and preaching work. He carried on this ministry through the Fascist period in Italy and into the Second World War.

He died in Mortara, in the Province of Pavia, on 4 June 1943. A reputation for holiness persisted after his death, and a canonical cause for beatification was introduced. He was beatified on 4 October 2008 in a ceremony held in Pavia, authorized by Pope Benedict XVI. The Catholic Church observes his feast on 4 June, the anniversary of his death. He has not been canonized. His memory is cultivated especially in the Diocese of Vigevano and by the congregation he founded, whose life and houses remain closely associated with Mortara and the Lomellina.
