Biography

Short Description

Francis Xavier Bianchi, known in Italian as Francesco Saverio Maria Bianchi, was born on 2 December 1743 in Arpino, a town then in the Kingdom of Naples and now in the Lazio region of Italy. He was given the name of the Jesuit missionary Saint Francis Xavier. Raised in a Catholic family, he showed from childhood a marked inclination to prayer and religious life. His parents at first hoped he would follow a secular profession, and he began studies that might have led toward a legal or civic career. He instead became convinced of a vocation to the priesthood and to community life among the Clerics Regular of Saint Paul, the congregation popularly known as the Barnabites.

He entered the Barnabites in the mid-eighteenth century and, after novitiate and ecclesiastical studies, was ordained a priest. Naples became the principal scene of his ministry for the rest of his life. There he combined teaching in philosophy and theology with an intense pastoral apostolate as preacher, confessor, and spiritual director, sought out by people of every social class. In the religious culture of Bourbon Naples he acquired a reputation for holiness that earned him the popular title Apostle of Naples. Hagiographical tradition attributes to him gifts of prophecy, discernment of consciences, and miraculous intercession; such claims belong to the cult that grew up around him rather than to strictly documented history.

Bianchi’s later decades unfolded against the political and religious upheavals of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, which brought occupation, the short-lived Parthenopean Republic, and repeated shocks to the Church in southern Italy. He remained in Naples and continued his ministry through these disturbances. In his final years he suffered a severe and progressive physical affliction that deformed his legs and confined him increasingly to his room, yet he persisted in receiving visitors and offering spiritual counsel. He died in Naples on 31 January 1815. His funeral drew large crowds, and devotion to him spread in the city and in his native Arpino.

The cause for his canonization proceeded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Pope Leo XIII beatified him in 1893, and Pope Pius XII canonized him on 25 October 1951. His liturgical feast is observed on 31 January, the anniversary of his death. His relics are venerated in the Barnabite church of Santa Maria di Caravaggio in Naples. He is remembered as a model of Barnabite religious life and as a pastor who combined learning with popular holiness in one of the great cities of Catholic Europe.
