Biography

Short Description

Francis Borgia, known in Spanish as Francisco de Borja y Aragón, was born in 1510 in Gandía in the Kingdom of Valencia, then under the Crown of Aragon. He belonged to the powerful Borja (Borgia) family. His paternal great-grandfather was Pope Alexander VI, and his grandfather Juan, second Duke of Gandía, had been murdered in Rome in the late fifteenth century. Francis’s father was Juan de Borja, third Duke of Gandía; his mother was Juana of Aragon, an illegitimate granddaughter of King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Raised for a grandee’s career, he was sent as a youth to the court of Charles V, where he received a courtly and humanist education and became a trusted companion of the emperor and of Empress Isabella of Portugal.

In 1529 he married the Portuguese noblewoman Leonor de Castro, a lady of the empress’s household. They had eight children. Francis rose quickly in royal service. After Empress Isabella died in 1539, he was charged with escorting her body to Granada for burial; the traditional accounts of his life treat the sight of her decomposed remains as a decisive conversion, impressing on him the vanity of rank and worldly display. That same year he was appointed viceroy of Catalonia. On his father’s death in 1543 he succeeded as fourth Duke of Gandía. He governed with a reputation for personal piety and administrative seriousness while remaining a great noble of the Spanish monarchy.

Leonor de Castro died in 1546. After arranging his children’s inheritance and resigning his titles in favor of his eldest son, Francis entered the Society of Jesus, a step that astonished aristocratic Spain. He made his Jesuit commitment in 1548 and was ordained priest in 1551. He founded a college at Gandía that received university status and is often described as the first Jesuit university. Close to Ignatius of Loyola, he worked in Spain and Portugal preaching, founding houses and schools, and using his former rank to shield the young order from court and Inquisition suspicion.

In 1565 a general congregation elected him third Superior General of the Society of Jesus, succeeding Diego Laínez. As general he tightened internal discipline, developed the educational apostolate, and encouraged overseas missions, including in the Americas. He combined severe personal austerity with cautious government of the order. In 1571 Pope Pius V sent him as papal legate to the Iberian kingdoms and France in connection with the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire. The journey, undertaken despite failing health, exhausted him.

Returning toward Rome, he became gravely ill, reached the city in late September 1572, and died there on 30 September. He was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1624 and canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. His liturgical feast has traditionally been kept on 10 October. Venerated as a model of the high-born penitent who became a Jesuit legislator and missionary organizer, he is invoked especially as a patron of Portugal and against earthquakes, and he remains one of the principal saints of the sixteenth-century Society of Jesus.
