Biography

Short Description

Saint Francis Borgia (Francisco de Borja y Aragón) was born in 1510 at Gandía in the Kingdom of Valencia, then part of the Crown of Aragon. He belonged to one of the most powerful noble houses of the Iberian Peninsula: through his father, Juan de Borja, Duke of Gandía, he was a great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI, and through his mother, Juana of Aragon, he was connected to the royal house of Aragon. Raised for a public career, he was sent to the court of the Emperor Charles V. In 1529 he married Leonor de Castro, a Portuguese noblewoman in the household of the Empress Isabella of Portugal; they had eight children. Francis later succeeded as fourth Duke of Gandía and, from 1539, served as viceroy of Catalonia. Traditional accounts, already current in the sixteenth century, relate that after he accompanied the corpse of the Empress Isabella to burial at Granada he was so struck by the decay of earthly splendour that he resolved to serve no mortal master thereafter.

The death of his wife in 1546 confirmed that resolve. After providing for his children and arranging the succession of his titles, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1548 and was ordained priest in 1551. He declined a cardinalate and other high ecclesiastical offices, living instead in Jesuit austerity while using his former rank and experience to found colleges and to establish the Society in Spain and Portugal. His combination of aristocratic standing, administrative skill, and evident personal holiness made him one of the most effective early promoters of the young order in the Iberian world.

In 1565 a general congregation elected him the third Superior General of the Society of Jesus, succeeding Diego Laínez. As general he consolidated the order’s internal government, extended its network of colleges, and encouraged missions in the Americas and the East. In 1571 Pope Pius V sent him with a papal legate on a diplomatic mission to the courts of Spain, Portugal, and France in support of the Holy League against the Ottoman Turks. The journey destroyed his health. He returned to Rome and died there on 30 September 1572.

Devotion to him spread rapidly among Jesuits and in Spain and Portugal. He was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1624 and canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. His feast is kept on 10 October. He is invoked against earthquakes and is associated as a patron with Portugal and with his native Gandía. Catholic tradition has long presented him as a great nobleman who relinquished rank and wealth, and as a Jesuit general of the Catholic Reformation who joined contemplative austerity with wide institutional work.
