Biography

Short Description

Francis Diaz, known in Spanish as Francisco Díaz, was an eighteenth-century Spanish Dominican priest and missionary who was martyred in China. Born in 1713 in Écija in the province of Seville, Spain, he entered the Order of Preachers. The Dominicans had a long-standing missionary commitment in East Asia, and Diaz was assigned to the mission field in China, specifically in the province of Fujian, where the order had been active since the previous century.

In Fujian, Diaz engaged in pastoral ministry among Chinese Catholics during a period when the practice of Christianity was illegal under Qing dynasty law. Missionaries often lived in hiding or moved frequently to avoid detection by authorities. The Christian communities they served were small and faced pressure to apostatize.

A wave of persecution struck the Fujian mission in the mid-1740s. The Dominican bishop Pedro Sanz and several of his priests, including Francis Diaz, were arrested by local officials. After prolonged imprisonment and ill-treatment, Bishop Sanz was executed in 1747. Diaz and three other Dominican priests—Francisco Serrano, Joaquín Royo, and Juan Alcober—were put to death by strangulation on 28 October 1748 in Fuzhou.

The five Dominicans were beatified as a group by Pope Leo XIII in 1893. In 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized them as part of a larger group of 120 martyrs who had died for the faith in China between 1648 and 1930. The Catholic Church commemorates these martyrs on 9 July. Francis Diaz is remembered as a witness to the faith in a time of persecution, though details of his personal life beyond his missionary work and martyrdom remain limited in historical records.
