Biography

Short Description

Francisco Fernández de Capillas, known in English as Francis Ferdinand de Capillas, was a Spanish Dominican missionary of the seventeenth century, later venerated as the first Catholic martyr of China. He was born in 1607 in the village of Baquerín de Campos in the province of Palencia in Castile. He entered the Order of Preachers at the convent of San Pablo in Valladolid and received the formation typical of the Dominican missionary tradition. After taking the habit he volunteered for the Spanish missions in Asia and was sent east by way of the colonial route to the Philippines.

He reached Manila in 1631 and spent about a decade in the islands as a priest of the Dominican province there. His work included pastoral and missionary labor in northern Luzon, especially among communities in the Cagayan region. In 1642 he was assigned to the Dominican mission on Formosa (Taiwan), then a Spanish frontier outpost. That same year Dutch forces seized the Spanish positions on the island, and Capillas and his companions were forced to abandon it. He crossed to the Chinese mainland and settled in Fujian province, making Fu'an the center of his ministry. There he preached, administered the sacraments, and served a small Christian community in the austere manner of a mendicant friar.

The mid-1640s were a period of dynastic collapse and war in China, as Ming authority disintegrated and Qing armies advanced. Local unrest and hostility toward foreign missionaries and their converts grew. Capillas was arrested, interrogated, and tortured. On 15 January 1648 he was executed by beheading at Fu'an. Dominican reports of his death presented him as dying with constancy, and the Church came to honor him as the protomartyr of the Catholic mission in China, that is, the first of the long line of Catholics put to death there for the faith.

His cult was kept within the Dominican Order and among Chinese Catholics. Pope Pius X beatified him on 2 May 1909. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with 119 other martyrs of China, a group whose members died in several waves of persecution from the seventeenth century to the twentieth. His individual liturgical memorial is 15 January, distinct from the collective feast of the 120 Martyrs of China. He remains associated with the early Dominican mission in Fujian and with the memory of the first generation of Catholic martyrs on Chinese soil.
