Biography

Short Description

Francis Taylor was an Irish Catholic merchant, alderman, and Mayor of Dublin who died in prison after refusing to abandon his faith. He was born in Swords, County Dublin, in the mid-sixteenth century (traditionally dated about 1550) to a family long established in that town north of the city. He settled in Dublin, prospered as a merchant, and entered municipal government as an alderman. In 1595 he was elected Mayor of Dublin, then the city’s highest civic office, at a time when Old English Catholic families still held a substantial share of urban power even as the Tudor Reformation advanced in Ireland.

As a recusant Catholic he would not conform to the established Church of Ireland. After James I’s accession, the Crown pressed prominent citizens to take the Oath of Supremacy, acknowledging the monarch as supreme governor of the Church. Taylor refused. In 1614 he was arrested and confined in Dublin Castle, the fortress and principal prison of the English administration in Ireland. He was held without trial for about seven years. The conditions of imprisonment were severe, and the long confinement destroyed his health.

He died in Dublin Castle in January 1621. He was married to Gennet Shelton and they had children; his death left his family to bear the civil and economic consequences of recusancy. His case belongs to a wider pattern in late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Ireland, in which oaths, fines, exclusion from office, and imprisonment were used to enforce religious conformity on the Catholic civic elite.

On 27 September 1992 Pope John Paul II beatified Taylor in Rome together with sixteen other Irish men and women killed in odium fidei between the 1530s and the early eighteenth century. The group is known as the Irish Martyrs and is commemorated collectively on 20 June. Taylor is remembered as a lay martyr of Dublin’s merchant class, an example of civic leaders who would not trade Catholic fidelity for office or liberty in Reformation-era Ireland.
