Biography

Short Description

Francis Xavier Ford was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1892, the son of Austin Ford and Elizabeth Riedel Ford, and was named after the Jesuit missionary saint Francis Xavier. Raised in a Catholic household in the Diocese of Brooklyn, he attended local Catholic schools and Cathedral College before becoming the first student to enroll at the newly established Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining, New York. Maryknoll, formally the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, had been founded in the early twentieth century by Fathers James Anthony Walsh and Thomas Frederick Price to send American priests to overseas missions. Ford was ordained a priest in 1917. The following year he was among the first small group of Maryknoll missionaries dispatched to China, arriving in the south of the country as the society began its work in East Asia.

In China he labored first in the Yeungkong (Yangjiang) region of Guangdong province and later among the Hakka people of the interior. He studied the local languages, founded parishes, schools, and medical works, and placed strong emphasis on forming Chinese catechists and a native clergy rather than relying solely on foreign personnel. In 1929 he was named prefect apostolic of the newly erected mission of Kaying (Jiaying), centered on the Hakka districts around Meixian in northeastern Guangdong. He was consecrated a bishop in 1935 as vicar apostolic of Kaying. When Pope Pius XII established the regular Catholic hierarchy in China in 1946, the vicariate became the Diocese of Kaying and Ford its first residential bishop. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s he remained with his people during the Sino-Japanese War and the wider Second World War, organizing relief and trying to shield civilians amid invasion, occupation, and civil conflict.

After the Communist victory in 1949, foreign missionaries were increasingly treated as agents of imperialism. Ford was arrested in December 1950, accused of espionage and related political crimes typical of the campaigns of that period. He was subjected to public humiliation, struggle sessions, beatings, and harsh imprisonment in Guangzhou (Canton). Weakened by maltreatment and illness, he died in prison there on 21 February 1952. Reports from the time and later testimony described him as having refused to recant his faith. His remains were not returned to the Church, and no verified burial site is recorded.

Ford was never beatified or canonized. A cause for beatification was later taken up in connection with his home Diocese of Brooklyn, and he is sometimes referred to as a Servant of God, but he has no approved feast day or official patronages. Maryknoll and Chinese Catholics of the former Kaying mission remember him as a pioneer of the first generation of American Catholic missions in China and as a bishop who stayed with his flock until death under the early People’s Republic. His career ran from the opening of Maryknoll’s China field in the late 1910s through the violent suppression of foreign mission work after 1949, and it left a Hakka Catholic community whose later history unfolded under prolonged restriction.
