Biography

Short Description

Francis Xavier Seelos was born on 11 January 1819 in Füssen, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, and was baptized the same day. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and, after studies in philosophy and theology at Munich, sought admission to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in order to work among German-speaking immigrants in North America. He sailed for the United States in 1843, completed his religious formation with the Redemptorists, and was ordained a priest in Baltimore in 1844.

His early priestly ministry was centered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at St. Philomena Church, where he labored for years under John Nepomucene Neumann. Seelos became widely known as a preacher of parish missions and as a confessor of unusual patience and kindness. He later served the Redemptorists as novice master and as prefect of students, helping to form future priests in the United States. Although his name was proposed for the diocese of Pittsburgh, he was not appointed bishop and remained in missionary and parish work.

In the 1850s and 1860s he was stationed at Redemptorist houses in Baltimore, Cumberland in Maryland, and Annapolis, and he preached missions in many parts of the country. Contemporaries described him as humble, cheerful, and constantly available to the sick and to penitents. In 1866 he was assigned to St. Mary's Assumption Church in New Orleans, a parish serving a large German Catholic population.

A yellow fever epidemic struck New Orleans in 1867. Seelos continued to visit and minister to the dying until he himself contracted the disease. He died on 4 October 1867 and was buried in St. Mary's Assumption Church. Popular devotion to him developed in later decades. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 9 April 2000. His shrine in New Orleans has remained a place of pilgrimage, and he is remembered for missionary zeal and pastoral charity among nineteenth-century Catholics in the United States.
