Biography

Francis Zhang Rong was a Chinese Catholic layman and catechist martyred during the Boxer Rebellion. He was born in 1838 in Zhujiahe, a village in Jing County (Jingxian) in Hebei province in northern China. In the nineteenth century Zhujiahe had become a substantial Catholic settlement within the apostolic vicariate of Xianxian. The faith had taken root in this part of Zhili through Lazarist and earlier Jesuit work, even though Christianity remained a small minority religion and was periodically treated with official hostility and popular suspicion as a foreign creed.

Zhang Rong lived as a farmer and also served his village as a catechist. In rural Chinese Catholic communities, where ordained priests were few and visits were irregular, catechists taught doctrine, prepared catechumens, and helped hold the local church together. Surviving notices of his life emphasize this public role rather than private or family circumstances, which are not securely recorded in the sources used for his cause.

In 1900 the Yihetuan movement, known in the West as the Boxers, turned violently against missionaries and Chinese Christians, whom they associated with foreign encroachment. Qing forces at times cooperated with or failed to restrain them. In mid-July 1900 Boxer bands and allied troops attacked Zhujiahe. Catholic villagers gathered in defense around the church. When the village was overrun on or about 20 July 1900, many inhabitants were killed after refusing to renounce the faith. Francis Zhang Rong was among those put to death that day. Contemporary estimates of the dead at Zhujiahe run into the thousands; only a limited number of the victims were later identified by name for veneration.

The Church judged Zhang Rong a martyr. Pope Pius XII beatified a group of Chinese martyrs of the Boxer period, including him, on 17 April 1955. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him in Saint Peter’s Square together with 119 other martyrs of China, a company whose deaths range from the mid-seventeenth century to 1930 and include both Chinese faithful and foreign missionaries. Their liturgical memorial, under the title of Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions, is kept on 9 July. The canonization was presented as recognition of the endurance of the Catholic community in China through repeated waves of persecution.
