Biography

Short Description

Francisco de Paula Tarín y Juanedá was a Spanish Jesuit priest of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was born in 1847 in Godelleta, in the province of Valencia in eastern Spain, and he died in Seville in 1910. In Spanish Catholic and Jesuit historiography he is remembered chiefly as a preacher of popular missions, especially in Andalusia, rather than as a theologian, bishop, or founder of a religious institute. His compound given name, Francisco de Paula, reflects traditional Spanish devotion to Saint Francis of Paola, a medieval founder with whom this Jesuit should not be confused.

Tarín entered the Society of Jesus and completed the formation then customary for Jesuits, including novitiate, studies, and ordination to the priesthood. The Society had been restored in Spain during the nineteenth century after earlier suppressions and expulsions, and he belonged to the generations that rebuilt Jesuit pastoral work under the unstable politics of Restoration Spain. His vocation was directed toward the apostolate of the word: parish missions, preaching, confessions, and the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, rather than toward high office or a literary career.

Much of his mature ministry unfolded in Andalusia. Popular missions of that period typically lasted days or weeks in a parish, combining sermons, catechesis, and the sacraments in order to reconcile the lapsed and deepen Christian practice among the baptized. Jesuit accounts present Tarín as austere in personal life, zealous in the confessional, and concerned with the religious condition of ordinary people. He did not become a bishop or a widely famous religious superior; his influence was that of a missionary priest laboring in southern Spain.

He died in Seville in 1910. A reputation for holiness persisted among those who had known his ministry, and a cause for beatification was later introduced, which is why devout literature sometimes calls him a Servant of God. He was not canonized or, in standard international lists, raised to the honors of the altar as a blessed; he was neither pope nor patriarch of an Eastern see. As a professed Jesuit he lived under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and he is not recorded as having married or as having had children.

Outside specialized Spanish Jesuit biographies, many particulars of his family background, the exact sequence of his residences, his burial, and the later procedural history of any cause of canonization are not consistently available in standard international reference works. The verifiable core of his life remains that of a Valencian-born Jesuit who spent himself in the popular missionary apostolate of Restoration-era Spain and who died in Seville at the beginning of the twentieth century, leaving a local memory of evangelical labor rather than a large body of published writings or a major institutional foundation.
