Biography

Short Description

Francisco de Paula Victor was born on 12 April 1827 in Campanha, in the province of Minas Gerais, then part of the Empire of Brazil. He was the son of Lourença Justiniana de Jesus, an enslaved woman of African descent, and was himself born into slavery under the Brazilian slave system that lasted until 1888. He was baptized in the parish church of Campanha shortly after birth. In a society that ordinarily denied schooling to the enslaved, he learned to read and write and later studied Latin and the humanities. His intelligence and piety drew the notice of local clergy, and he formed a vocation to the Catholic priesthood, a path almost closed to Black men born in bondage in imperial Brazil.

Civil status and canon law both stood in his way. Enslaved persons could not be ordained, and candidates of servile origin needed dispensations. Victor obtained manumission and the required ecclesiastical permissions. He was supported by Antônio Ferreira Viçoso, bishop of Mariana, a prelate known for pastoral concern for the poor and for Brazilians of African descent. On 14 June 1851, in Mariana, Viçoso ordained him a priest. Black clergy were exceedingly rare in the nineteenth-century Brazilian Church, and the ordination was a striking exception to the racial order of the time.

Soon afterward he was assigned to Três Pontas in southern Minas Gerais, and he remained there as parish priest for more than fifty years, until his death. He served the church of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda and became widely known for works of charity. He visited the sick, assisted the dying, and gave material help to the poor, including formerly enslaved people after abolition. He devoted himself to the instruction of children and was trusted as a teacher and confessor even by white families of local standing, something remarkable given the racial prejudices of the age. He lived in personal austerity and acquired already in his lifetime the popular names Apostle of Charity and the saint of Três Pontas.

He died in Três Pontas on 23 September 1905, at the age of seventy-eight. Devotion to his memory continued in Minas Gerais, and a cause for beatification was later introduced in the Catholic Church. After the diocesan inquiry and the Roman examination of his life, Pope Francis authorized on 10 November 2015 the decree recognizing that Victor had practiced the theological and cardinal virtues to a heroic degree, and he received the title Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal feast day has been assigned. He is remembered as a formerly enslaved Afro-Brazilian diocesan priest whose long pastorate crossed the racial and social boundaries of his century.
